Fergusons of Jib Cottage, Benderloch
« on: Friday 29 April 11 15:39 BST (UK) »
I have been researching this family in support of the Fergus(s)on DNA Project. What I have found is posted here:
http://dna.cfsna.net/GEN/Argyll/Ardchattan.html

The headstone of Alexander Ferguson (1866-1951) appears with the gravestone pictures at:
https://picasaweb.google.com/ardchattan ... attanKirk#

I have run into a dead end with his parents as named on Alexander's death cert; i.e John Ferguson, a joiner, and Mary Rowan. They should have been alive in 1898 for on Alexander's marriage to Euphemia McLean neither John or Mary are shown as deceased. I can find neither a marriage or death record for John and Mary, nor can I find records of any other children. I cannot find Alexander on either the 1871 or 1881 census. In each of the later census records Alexander's place of birth is given as Kilmore, Argyll yet I can find no birth record. Any help would be appreciated.

Regarding Jib Cottage, Benderloch, does this building survive? If so are there Ferguson resident there today?
Thanks,
Colin Ferguson

Hello Ev,
I think you are right. I looked at the parish record and Alexander Rowan was illegitimate. The informant was Duncan Cameron, Governor. I suppect he is the same Duncan Cameron "General Of Poor House" in the 1871 census of Kilmore and Kilbride. One of the tenants in the poor house is an orphan named Alexander Rowan (transcribed as Rossan on Ancestry.com), age 5 born Kibride or Kilmore (hard to say which as it looks like one word written over the other).
Thanks!
Colin

Yes the Jib still exists in Benderloch.
The postcode is PA37 1QP
And there are a variety of Ferguson families in the area.
Maybe if you look up the addresses in www.bt.com and write to them they might be interested in your research.
Otherwise you could write a letter to the local newspaper explaining your interest, to the likes of the Oban Times.

Hello James,
It is very nice to hear from you! Do you happen to know any of the particulars on your ancestor John Ferguson the joiner, such as parents name or when he died?
Thank you,
Colin
