The Thomas Kelly of 51st that settled in Canada was discharged from the Army in Oct 1818 . That was before Edward Enlisted so he couldnt have served at the same time.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Does anyone know what Kellys were in the 51st Regiment when Edward transferred from the 10th to the 51st Reg't to join his elder brother on 1 October 1833? Maybe that would get me closer to figuring out who his parents were.

Best wishes,

Marc Kelly

There is a Robert Kelly, born Donaghmore, Tyrone in 1898 who is in the 51st in 1833. He is pensioned out in 1837 due to ill health. The medical assessment is carried out in Chatham, so there could be a connection there. The record is available on findmypast if you want to pursue it further. Tyrone doesn't seem too far from Louth. There are a few more possibilities - Kelly is a pretty common name!

Thanks for your help. If it is not too much trouble, could you list the other possibilities that you mentioned?

The other possibility I suppose is that he was in the 51st on October 1 1833 but transferred to another regiment before retiring.

Best wishes,

Marc Kelly

You can search the catalogue of the National Archives using surname and WO for the series code (WO = war office ie army documents) to see what there may be there http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp

Some of these recordsa are available elsewhere pay per view or subscription as previously mentioned or else obtained from the National Archives in person or for a fee.

Hi

Have you checked the GRO army marriages (they come under the GRO overseas section whether they occurred overseas or not) for an army chaplain marriage (which would be Anglican)?

Dear Valda,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have looked, but did not find it. Then again, there aren't that many there, so they must have lost a lot.

Best wishes,

Marc Kelly
