Benjamin Rees, St Dogmaels, born Penrhydd 1807
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 00:55 BST (UK) »
Hi, can anyone please help me find the parents of my G G G Grandfather, Benjamin Rees?

According to the 1881 census he was born abt 1807 in Penrhydd, Pembrokeshire, but in the 1871 one he was listed as being born in St Dogmaels. He was a fisherman, who married Elizabeth Stephen in St Dogmaels in 1830, at Blaenwaun Baptist Church, and they had four children, Thomas, Elizabeth, David, and my G G Grandfather John Rees, a successful Master Mariner who moved his family to Swansea.

We have just spent a day looking at the MIs in St Thomas' Church, St Dogmaels, and John Rees' grave is a prominent red granite obelisk near the church gate. I'm having difficulty, however, in getting any further back in the Rees family, so would be grateful for any help.

Thanks

Alison

As I understand it all mrge pre September 1837 intro of Civil Registration, had to by law take place in the established church, therefore the mrge of Benjamin and Elizabeth could not have taken place at Blaenwaun Baptist Chapel in 1830.

My research shows a Benjamin Rees married Elizabeth Stephens at St Dogmaels parish church 14 Dec 1830. It is quite possible that the mrge was blessed in a further ceremony in Chapel, but the mrge ‘proper’ would have taken place in the established church.

I am quite happy to obtain a jpeg of the entry for you, however since you are within traveling distance of St Dogmaels I presume for personal interest and enjoyment, you would prefer to visit and obtain the mrge entry from the Rec Office for yourself and follow up on research into their baptism’s. Currently I do not believe Elizabeth’s parents where married in the area. Remember pre 1837 parents are not listed on the parish mrge entry, but sometimes an idea can be gained from the witnesses.

Baptism and burial (not to be confused with birth and death) where permitted in Chapel pre Sept 1837.

Post Sept 1837 mrge came into line with baptism and burial and where permitted in what ever faith in Church, Chapel or Registry Office.
Post 1837 births by law (in theory) had to be registered within 6 weeks of the event, baptism could take place on any date at any age in any location following birth. A person could have more than 1 baptism(i.e. change of faith ~ like mine), never more than one registration
Post 1837 deaths by law (in theory) had to be registered within 6 weeks of the event.
In the case of both births and deaths index’s are by date of registration, not by date of the event and registration districts are those of the registry offices where the event was registered again not necessarily the registration district of where the event took place(as I have learnt to my cost).

Hi Alison

For the Parish Records for Penrhydd (Penrith)you will need to look at the Bishops Transcripts held at the NLW or they are on Micro Film (LDS)

Thanks you very much both, most helpful.

I will try to get along to the Pembs records office to look at the marriage record, and also will try to get hold of the the Penrhydd birth record.
