Gray/Mobbs Travellers
« on: Tuesday 26 April 11 23:18 BST (UK) »
Wife is decended from William Gray/Tabitha on fathers side and James Mobbs/Bethania on mothers side.  Understand Tabitha and Bethania were sisters (daughters of Winston and Hannah Smith), but I cannot find any Parish records to prove this.  Anyone have any info that would help?

Hi Carole, thanks for answering

On the Gray side I have census returns showing William Gray born about 1794 in Rotherham, Tabitha born about 1801 in Great ?.  No details of marriage but I have them as a couple at the baptism of son Sidney Gray (ancestor), 25th January 1824, North Wheatley, Notts, also at several other baptisms in the Lincolnshire area.

On Mobbs side I have no census returns, but James Mobbs and Bethania are a couple at the baptism of son Moses Mobbs (ancestor) on 5th April 1840 at Corringham, Lincolnshire, and James is down as father when Moses married Silva Smith on 7th July 1862 Springthorpe, Lincolnshire.  Understand that James and Bethania had children from about 1820, which would put their births round about 1800.

Can't remember where I got the information that Tabitha and Bethania were sisters, it was mentioned in a forum, I made a note but didn't list where the info came from.

Tabitha was bapt 1803 Cropwell Bishop, Bethania Smith 1800 Seaton, Rutland. they were daughters of WISDOM smith and Hannah.

Bethania had a liason with William Gray before marrying James Mobbs.

Tabitha remained married to the same William Gray.  He was bapt 1791 (I think! not looking at sources) at Ashwell Hrts s/o Charles Gray and Equally (Aquila) Smith.

Hi Ann

Thanks very much for the info, I think it must be one of your posts where I saw the original story.  Do you know if the sisters baptisms are from parish records?  Its a confusing family, James and Bethany twin sons Righteous and Cornelius are in the Elksley parish register as Gray, yet Moses 13 years later is in the Corringham register as Mobbs.  The families obviously kept in contact, Sidney Grays daughter Sophia married Moses Mobbs son James in 1891.  What is interesting is that 40 years later Sidney Grays grandson Horace Wilfred Gray married Moses Mobbs great granddaughter Olive Maud Mobbs, it seams without either being aware of the previous family history

Again thanks for your help

I'm sure this James and Bethany are the ones I'm looking for there children were eliace my 2 x great grandad who married Amelia hurn/heron and twins cornelious and righteous who married sage hurn /heron Amelia's sister and Moses it confused me as I saw a Moses mobs in a census ? This is why was James a traveler if not that's why they might have took the name Gray ?  :)
