This is confusing!

That 1851 census entry that you have in your first post, I am wondering if this is the other William given who else shows in the household:

William Mccredie 83
John Mccredie 37
Helen Mccredie 33
Archibald Milmine 18
John Kennedy 11
William Cloy 22, agr. lab.
Catherine Mcginn 18 house servant

Address: South Milton, Old Luce

William Cloy is the William who married Catherine McGinn in 1856, with some children born before their marriage and whose 1861 census entry I posted first.

Hi Monica - yes it is confusing.  :-\

If Adrian definitely knows his William married and died in Australia, he might be safest purchasing either or both of those in the hope that they will give him William's parent's names.

I can't see a marriage for William to Jessie on SP - can you? And do you think the 1841 marriage for John looks right?

This was the marriage that I saw on IGI for John Cloy:

John CLOY and Jane BROADFOOT Marriage on 4 August 1842 in Old Luce

The children that Adrian mentioned for John and Jane look to be staying with her parents in 1851.

William's marriage to Jessie, again from IGI, is I think this one:

William CLOY and Jess DAVIDSON Marriage on 22 December 1853 in Old Luce.

All entries from the OPRs, so information on the parish register likely to be minimal.

Monica  :)

PS: Where does Australia come in? Did William Cloy die there?

I found this old post http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DAVIDSON/2008-09/1221496062 which gives William's parents as Robert Cloy and Elizabeth McGuffock. Source of info not incuded though.

Cloy is quite an unusual name, very little coming up on IGI for the name (also worth trying as McCloy/McLoy and other variants).

oops, I think I made it up!  :-[
(Am getting mixed up with another poster's poser - his ancestor died in Australia)  I blame lack of sleep - I'm not functioning too well this morning. Sorry about that.  :-[

The IGI has Robert Cloy, son of William Cloy and Jess Davidson born 1858 Old Luce. (extracted entry)
Adrian has his birth as 1849?

SP has 2 deaths in the statutory registers 1855-1905 all Scotland:
William Cloy Death 1862 Old Luce (unknown age)
William Cloy Death 1889 Stoneykirk (aged 63)

There is a Cloy stone in Whithorn Kirkyard (184). No idea if it's related, but being such a rare surname it could be.

From earlier searches, I think William Cloy shows with wife Jessie in the censuses up to 1881 in Leswalt. The 1891 census has just Jessie, so likely death for William perhaps between those two censuses.
