McKay, James (shiver): Glasgow grocer c. 1845
« on: Sunday 24 April 11 15:22 BST (UK) »
A total wall for 15 years.
From son's marriage [Married Dec. 1864 at London Road, Glasgow by rites of the Free Church of Scotland by Alex Wilson, Minister, Bridgeton Free Church, Glasgow], and a 1916 Jamestown death cert., all we have is John b.c 1845 Glasgow, son of James McKay, a grocer, and Jane(t) Smith both deceased; married Glasgow in 1864; died, again son of James, a grocer, and Jane McKay nee Smith, both deceased.
John was my great grandfather. I have never been able to establish any siblings. I have John on every census enumeration from 1871 through 1901, and his birth year seems to vary on each of them (somewhere between 1844 and 1847), although "born in Glasgow" never changes.
Perhaps James McKay and Jane(t) Smith were originally from Ireland - at least that's been my excuse, no other logical reason.
As you can perhaps tell, I would be greatly appreciative for ANY help whatsoever.
Thank you - Brian in Toronto

What was John's occupation and address on his marriage certificate?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

"Married 13 Dec 1864 to Jane Caldwell.  Marriage certificate:  1865, Registration District 644/3 Entry no. 6.  Married at London Road, Glasgow by rites of the Free Church of Scotland by Alex Wilson, Minister, Bridgeton Free Church, Glasgow.  1.  Groom:  John McKay, Calico Printer, bachelor, age 20 of 9 Reid St., Glasgow:  2.  Parents: James McKay, Grocer and Jane McKay (M/S Smith) both deceased:  3.  Bride:  Jane Caldwell, Yarn winder, spinster, age 19 of 267 New Dalmarnock Rd. Glasgow. 4. Parents: George Caldwell, flesher, and Janet Caldwell (M/S Lindsay). Father deceased.  Witnesses:  Peter McFarlane and Dennis McDade."

As well, on the 1871 he was a 'calico printer', and the family lived at 283 Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow Calton, Bridgeton.
