I think that Martin's cottages may have been the ones currently called Herbert Cottages. These are in the townland of Ballsbridge as indicated on the 1901 B1 form for Martin's Cottages, and located north of Merrion Road, and just east of the Dodder.

On the OSI map, from about 1890, there are 8 cottages shown at this location, which also matches the B1 1901 form, and the description of houses as having just one window in the front also fits the current houses, which look about the right age.

They are labelled on the 25" OSI map as Pembroke Cottages : Herbert/Pembroke/Martin's Cottages

Thank you very much Shane !
I think you must be right as when I told my Uncle that I had found his mother living at Martins Cottages he was surprised because he said that as a child he remembered her mentioning Pembroke cottages but he said that was over 70 odd years ago and he could have been wrong because he never went there to visit .  Do you know Shane who actually owned those cottages back then?

You've been a great help once again Shane !

There's no owner(s) of the properties shown on the 1901 building return, but given the name and area involved I would suspect they were part of the Pembroke estate - i.e. Fitzwilliam Family. They owned large amount of property in Dublin, including much of the Donnybrook and Ballsbridge areas.

There are a number of other sets of Pembroke Cottages in Dublin city and suburbs e.g. several in the city centre, two sets in Donnybrook and more out as far as Dundrum and Blackrock.

I haven't found the cottages in 1911 yet - but will post here when/if I do..

Thank you both for reply and info (map was very helpful).  I had wondered if it was possible James might be a brother, however Charles was born in Co. Wicklow? so therefore definitely not related.

Hi Ross44
Do you have a marriage cert/ birth cert for Charles? If so his parents names may be mentioned on them. James father's name was John Byrne. So far I haven't found James' birth cert yet. Having such a common name isn't making it very easy.

Good luck in your search.

Athena GR.
My g/f Charles' nephew Nicholas Kerwin, 2 Pembroke Place. Ballsbridge married a Jane Byrne in 1903, at which time her address was 16 Brook Lawn Donnybrook (located on map from Shane) - however her father is named as Michael Byrne - any relationship?

Yes, I have his marriage cert and his father is William Byrne, Co. Wicklow.  As you say having such a common name as Byrne makes it very difficult! Best wishes.

Hi , I have got a Michael Byrne (1880 ) and a Jane Byrne (1885) in the family tree but they would be too young to be your Jane and Michael. Perharps there is some relationship as names often repeat themselves through a family but there again some names are extrememly common .   My gr grandfather James Byrne was living at 2 Pembroke Cottages at the time of his marriage 1878.  As for your family coming from Wicklow , It was always thought that my grandmother's family were from Wicklow despite the fact that the 1901 census has her and her parents down as being from Dublin but perharps I just haven't reached my Wicklow ancestors yet.
