Martins Cottages Ballsbridge
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 16:46 BST (UK) »
In 1901 census my grandmother's family were living at 4 Martins Cottages Ballsbridge (Pembroke East & Donnybrook, Dublin) I was wondering if anybody knew what this address is today?
  Thank you.

there was a previous topic by someone looking for the same cottages a while ago ... unfortunately without success - see  :  Old Dublin addresses

I've had a quick look around the area on the old OSI maps (25" map is from c1890), but didn't see any sign of them - see : Balls Bridge

ah ok Thanks very much. I don't think the cottages were there in 1911 either well at least i can't seem to find them on the 1911 census. My grandmother's family then moved to O'Brien's Place (Pembroke West, Dublin) which I also haven't found yet.
 Thanks again

They seem to have existed up to at least 1922 - see eadaoin's note  on the other post (reply#7).

The cottages are included in the street index of Thom's 1904 and 1914, but they dont have a separate street listing (not unusual for small rows of cottages). Sometimes small side streets like these are mentioned in the details for street listing items... but are more difficult to locate them that way. I've tried the major roads in the Ballsbridge area and not seen any mention ..

I also found a mention on this site for the second adress that my family lived at O'Briens Place . http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=s32976r34gi2hd5bjkonlna574&topic=488747;prev_next=next

Between houses disappearing and women who keep changing their ages I'm beginning to think that my family don't want to be found !
Thanks again Shane , I hope you are enjoying the Easter break.

I am new to this site and also interested in locating Martins Cottages. My grandfather Charles Byrne at the time of his marriage in 1889 was residing in 8 Martins Cottages Ballsbridge.

Hi Ros44
Unfortunately I'm still not any the wiser as to the whereabouts of Martin's s cottages. My grandmother Esther Byrne was living at 4 Martins cottages in the 1901 census.
She was living at 3 Church Lane at the time of her birth in 1895 although her brothers John(1878) and Michael (1880) were living at 5 Martins cottages at the time of their births. So it seems the family started their family life off in Martin's cottages , moved then went back in 1901 or there abouts. Her parents names were James Byrne and Elizabeth Kilbride.  My gr gr Grandfathers name was John Byrne ; so far I haven't come across the name Charles Byrne in my research.
 Regards
Athenagr
