Gilroy/McNamee marriage
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 00:45 BST (UK) »
I have a marriage record for a Robert S. Gilroy and a Minnie McNamee for 1913 (1) South Shields.

I have managed to trace Minnie's family prior to her marriage but cannot find Robert's.  I do not know what the S. stands for.  I could only find two entries in the GRO for Robert S. Gilroy - one was Stokoe, born 1864 and died 1864, the other was born in 1899 which would make him only 14 in 1913 which doesn't seem likely.

Has anyone got these people in their tree or can anyone shed light on Robert S., please?

                  Joan

How old was he when they married and what was his fathers name and occupation?

You can then check the free 1911 index for him - there are 4 entries for Northumberland but none for Durham

Struggling to find William and Ellen in 1881 or 1891.

1901 children all born All Saints, Newcastle
One of them is Stoddart GILROY age 15

Births Sep Qtr 1885
GILROY Stoddart Baird Newcastle T. 10b 113

Can't even find him in 1891. Maybe time to give up.

The venue was "unknown" for the marriage of William Gilroy and Ellen Robertson so most likely the register office

There is a baptism of William Gilroy in All Saints 17 Oct 1852 s/o Henry and Elizabeth

I think the Gilroy's are somehow related to the Baird's as a William born abt 1852 is a grandson with Stoddart Baird b 1798 in Newcastle in the 1861 census. RG09/3828 folio 92 page 21.  Also there is a grandson Stoddart Baird age 11.  The wife is Elizabeth but I don't think she is the first wife--someone named Martha was.

Hi Janis,

I have already connected the Gilroys with the Bairds following Bryan's info.

Stoddart's wife is named as Elizabeth on the '41C, '51C, '61C and '71C with both dying before '81C.
Where do you get Martha from as his wife, please?

I think Henry must have married Elizabeth Baird although I cannot match them up on the GRO.  Elizabeth was married in 1852 (2) Sth. Shields.  William was born 1852 so it would match up there.  Unfortunately Henry Gilroy's name doesn't seem to appear in the GRO for the same quarter 1852(2)
There is a marriage for a Henry Gilroy in 1851 (4) but the only Elizabeth on that list is named Hazon.

A lot more searching to do methinks.
