Brampton Workhouse
« on: Friday 22 April 11 13:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know the exact location of the Brampton Workhouse, all that I know is that it was a little way south of the town.
Also is the building that housed the inmates of the Workhouse still standing and are there any records held associated with this institution?

Cheers
Mumfy

Hi Mumfy

Here  is a link http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Brampton that gives you a map and a picture of the workhouse as it stands in 2005.
This was the first one before the second one was built in Brampton.  There is some good reading on the link provided.

If you go onto google maps and google Brampton then zoom in on Gelt Road and keep going up you can see what the workhouse looks like now.

Thanks so much Mrs Aky!

My ancestors' connection would've been with the second, larger Workhouse and perhaps they'd be happy to know that it's been demolished.

The link which outlines surviving records could prove to be useful and I'll contact the Carlisle Records Office to see what additional information it might be possible to find out, over and beyond the Census records which place the family there.

Cheers

Your welcome Mumfy

Just for your information Carlisle Records Office is closed as it has been relocated to another part of the city I think it is open the begining of June.

I do know some of the records have been placed in Carlisle library but not sure which ones, perhaps a call to the library might help.

Good luck in your search

Hi Mumfy

Can't waitto see the new record office!

I'm pretty sure these are the records I've used and they were amazing.  There's probably a list with dates by seaching A2A online as well.

If they were, I got all sorts of details about the situation at admission and there were loads of details in the wardens notes but it varied from date to date.

Good luck!
