« on: Friday 22 April 11 12:34 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been contacted on Ancestry and I am worried that the researcher is adding all the wrong people to there tree.

Does anyone have any info abt Samuel Barratt born abt 1804 in Desborough who married Elizabeth who was from Cornwall

I have got 5 children's names all born in Corby, Ann Barratt, George Barratt, Harriett Maria Barratt, Newman Shrewsbury Barratt and Caroline Louisa Fisher Barratt.

I appreciate any help.

Cheers

Hi mgeneas

Thank you for replying to my request.

The family are here in the 1861 census:

RG9/958/14 p 21

However I think I have answered my own question because I have found this marriage here:

https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/9QBQ-SVP/p4

I think Samuel Barratt was born in Desborough on 16 Oct 1804 and was the Son of William Barratt & Dinah Thomson.

What do you think?.

cheers

I agree with you that William and Dinah are the parents of Samuel.

I had a look at one of the trees on ancestry. They have hijacked my Barretts from Walgrave instead of doing proper research.

The marriage index has Thomas instead of Samuel marrying Elizabeth Shrewsbury. I will get it checked.

Hi,

That's probably the same one that hijacked my Great-Grandparents Fred Hills & Mary Ann Barritt [& children] who married in Walgrave in 1895.  I contacted them originally when they added them but then I looked at it and thought they have the wrong people. They are getting the Barratt's mixed up with the Barritt's of Walgrave.

I find with ancestry that people just import info from other peoples trees without actually researching it probably.

I have made a mini tree for them to look at and I said that they will be probably going to have to do some major surgery to their tree.

Cheers

You are related to me then. I believe all the 19th c Walgrave Barritts are descended from John Barrett and Susannah Watson. I am descended from their eldest child William 1766-1833. And his daughter Ann who married Charles Deacon in 1821

The name John Barrett  of Walgrave caught my eye, as I am related to the Barretts (often spelt Barritt) of Walgrave through my 3X  paternal great-grandfather Solomon Blakesley (1776-1845) of Wold, later spelt Old.

Solomon's eldest daughter Ann (1797-1875) married an William Laughton(1798-1843), whose son Edward(1825-1905) had a daughter Georgiana (born 1865), who married Henry Albert (aka Harry) Barrett( born 1863), John Barrett's great-great grandson. Henry's grandfather was also Samuel Barrett (1807-1888), who is not the Samuel Barrett, the subject of three previous posts( I believe).

Unfortunately, it is all too common on Ancestry to confuse family trees, without researching properly, particularly where surname spelling varies. I have stuck to the spelling Barrett wherever possible, There are so many conflicting interpretations by Ancestry members of the source data; just examining and understanding Census entries is difficult enough, as you can never be sure of their accuracy.

In the case of the Barrett/Barritt/Barratt family, even BMD records can be ambiguous. For example, I've found many people fail to understand that many quoted dates of birth may,in fact, be baptism/christening dates, as the actual physical day of birth was not always known or recorded.

I have found reseaching the  Barrett/Barrett family paricularly challenging, as there were so many of them with similar names, repeated generation after generation and by different families. I am also linked with the WEDD family of South Cambridgeshire/ North West Essex, by a 1735 marriage of an Elizabeth Blakesley(1711-1760) to a Peter Wedd, of whom I have counted 15 other Peters, let alone all the other repeated favourites.

I believe I have researched my link with the Barretts of Walgrave correctly, but if I've got it wrong, please let me know.

Best wishes

Ian Blakesley.

Hi,
I have a Google Search that runs each day and this Topic popped up today.  I just setup my profile so you will have to excuse me if I make mistakes.
My 2nd great grandfather is Thomas Barrett who said he was born 15 Mar 1775 in England.  He died 8 Apr 1866 in Baptist Valley, Tazewell County, Virginia.  When I started my research that is all I had to go on.  His DOB and location is shown on a Family Bible with information continued by his daughter Susannah E Barrett and her family.
In an effort to make the link back to England a cousin and myself had our Y-DNA tested in hopes that we would eventually match someone with solid written evidence of that link.  After several years we found a very close match.  Their ancestor, Timothy son of Richard and Elizabeth Woolston, arrived in America on 7 May 1852.  They had passanger list and other documentation indication that they came from Walgrave.
I eventually found the Walgrave Parish records transcribed by Marilyn Ponting a descendant of William Barritt and Mary Hills.  The records reflected a Thomas Barrett/Barwick who was christened 9 Jul 1775 and his parents were John & Susannah Barwick/Barrett.  Marilyn said she found the Vicar apparently couldn't spell.

Thomas being christined on 9 JUul 1775 with a birth date of 15 Mar 1775 and a very close Y-DNA match seems about as close to the right person as one could get without actually talking to them.

Any thoughts?

I will share my information.  (*)

Thanks

HI.

Bruce welcome to Rootschat.  :)

You certainly seem to have tried to insure with family documents
and DNA that you are related to your lineage.

I don't think many of us go that far.

Marilyn Ponting is one of the Northants Marriage Indexes transcribers
and has replied above.

One point that I think is a bit un-clear is about Vicars not being able to
spell correctly.
Quote
Marilyn said she found the Vicar apparently couldn't spell.

At the time Vicars/Clerks spelt as they thought they heard the name there
was no standard spelling to Forenames/Surnames that I am aware of.

I have also transcribed quite a few Parish Records and see often when
a new Vicar/Clerk arrived in the Parish the spelling changed, hence
variants began.
