where was the mother?

On Thursday August 25th 1881 the Kinfauns Castle departed from London to Cape Town South Africa with Mr Thomas MULVIHAL and his son Thomas on board. There was no mention of any wife? Would it be possible that she went on another ship? I looked up every ship that I could find without finding any other member of the family.
Anyone know where else to look?

How old was son Thomas?  Maybe we can find his birth or possibly the 1881 census entry.

It's not an answer to your query, but out of interest a Mr. T. Mulvihal also went to Cape Town from Southampton in October 1903 on the R.M.S. Norman (not with any family members).

He may have gone on his own - have you checked the censuses?

I have no idea how old Thomas jr was - it only stated thomas jr.

Did also see the other Thomas Mulvihal on the ship in 1903.....maybe this is the one I am looking for  :-[
This is my mother in laws family that I am looking into for her. Her dad (James Mulvihal) died when she was about 4.
All she knows is that they came from Ireland and that James was born in South Africa.

Has your mother in law got her parents' marriage certificate?  That will give James' father's name and occupation which will help considerably.

Andrea, when I spoke to her yesterday she said she did have them at one time but cannot find them now. Am sure they are in the house somewhere  ;)
Have also asked her to go to the cemetery in Cape Town as this might give more info!
Totally agree having their correct names etc would be such a big help!
Will continue to look up things.

Hi,

Do you know when James was born?

Have you searched NAAIRS there are quite a few mentions of Thomas and James MULVAHAL but no BMD that I can find, but of course it is a name that could easily be misspelt so I might have missed them.
