Skinners of Leicestershire
« on: Thursday 21 April 11 19:24 BST (UK) »
I live in Canada and I'm going to be in England in July. I want to spend some time in Leicestershire, specifically around Rearsby, Long Clawson, Wymondham, Barrow-upon-Soar, looking for information. Thomas Skinner, born Rearsby 1834, moved to London and married there. I'm OK with the family since then. His father, William, born Wymondham about 1799, married Ann Hickling of Barrow-upon-Soar. Before him there were three Williams, all born in Long Clawson in 1767, 1737 and 1704 approx. They married Elizabeth Dobney (1772), Ann ? (about 1745) and Dorothy Wells (dob unknown). Elizabeth was from Stapleford, I know nothing about Ann and Dorothy was from Long Clawson.

I think the father of the 1704 William was Thomas, born 1678, in Harby, but I'm not sure.  I would really appreciate any suggestions or hints about the unknown parts and about where I should concentrate my search when I arrive in the area.

                                                                   Many thanks,  Brian Skinner

Hi brian, i hope you enjoy your visit to our beautiful part of the midlands!

the Leics villages site will give you some background info and details of records available on the villages you have mentioned;

http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/

all records are held at the leics record office so it may be well worth a visit there;

http://www.leics.gov.uk/record_office.htm

some Barrow on soar records are available online at the villages site:

http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/barrowuponsoar/availablechurchandbu.html

i see there are also some Skinner records on the freereg site so worth a look first.

HOWEVER!

there is also:

William Skinner 1/2/1768 Long Clawson s/o John & Mary

the fathers William & John may well be brothers but it might be difficult to say which is your william?

Hi Diddy: Thanks for all that work and the clues you found. I'm sure you're right in that William and John were brothers, but I'm fairly sure that the 1767 William is mine.  I joined the Leicestershire villages site on Thursday and I'm waiting for them to confirm my membership, so that I can post messages.

I'll certainly look at the other village sites you included, as well as the other links.

I'm looking forward to seeing the villages. I'll be meeting my sisters and a cousin, so it will be a family exploration. I guess we'll be visiting a lot of churches and cemetaries!
                                                                Thanks again..........Brian
