Completed Kilmarnock - 1851 Census
« on: Thursday 21 April 11 07:09 BST (UK) »
Are there any problems with the 1851 Census at Ayrshire.

I'm missing 2 Doran families whose BMD registration records and later Census indicate that they were in Kilmarnock before and after 1851.

I've looked on Ancestry (shows 2) and FreeCEN (shows 0)
Scotlandspeople does show 9 matches for Dora*, 14 for Dor* in Kilmarnock, however at this stage I prefer not to use credits on Census's. I may in the future.

Patrick Doran 1814/1816 Ireland, wife Helen
David Doran 1822 Ireland, wife Catherine

Mick
Jeffs - Northamptonshire to Leicestershire to Queensland, Australia
Lewis - Wales to Gloucestershire to NSW & Queensland, Australia
Iddols & Baylis - Gloucestershire
Mary Jones - born 1863 Staffordshire, died 1948 Queensland, Australia
daughter of James Jones and Eliza Aston
Dorans - Ireland to Scotland to Queensland, Australia
Ralph - Ireland to Scotland to Queensland, Australia
Jillett - Robert, Transported Convict from Surrey
Christison - Edinburgh,Scotland
Cameron - Edinburgh, Scotland

Hello Mick

The 1851 census for Kilmarnock is missing. You can check  this on Scotlands People without logging in. Just go into the Home Page, then click on 'About Our Records', then on Indexes. There's a menu on the right, and  you'll find Censuses with a sub-heading of 'Missing Censuses' which has a list of all the missing censuses throughout Scotland.

Yes the 1851 census for Kilmarnock, was originally missing from Scotlandspeople, i think however that situation was rectified quite some time ago.

Mick, your families are there in 1851. Kilmarnock, census, although what looks like the David, and Catherine, come up with the unusual spelling of Down, instead of Doran.

There does not seem to be any pre 1855. birth registrations for any children of either couple, but David, and Catherine, have some unusual spellings of some of there childrens surnames after 1855, which correspond with census information that it is their children.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks Jonn,

1851 Census index on Ancestry was the only census I couldn't locate for both families.

I have almost all the BMD registrations in Scotland for David and Catherine's chlidren, also for children of their son Hugh and his wife Helen (Ellen)
Their childrens Baptism records are shown on Scotlandspeople as at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. These include birth date.

Earlier than 1844 I think the Baptism records are at Ayr for Patrick's children. I've not yet checked.

Yes their surname spelling varied, most start wilh Dor, a couple are Dolan. David always signed with his mark.
