Thanks Trevor. You read in the papers about all these fake guys marching with a chest full of medals on remembrance day with medals they never earned. I wonder if the same was the case back in 1843. I hope not, as I have found a nice medal named to him that I would like to buy !

hi glyn
yes glyn things like that do happen but i feel are more isolated incidents than the norm , now this medal you say youu,ve found and would like to buy just what is it for does it have his name stamped on it or are you going by a written citation or some such if you can describe it and all that is written on it i,m sure an expert here will put you right on it , only beware as there are fakes out there in that field especially .

tell us more .

Hi Trevor.

The medal I am looking at is a Gwalior Star that is currently up on E bay. I am totally convinced that the medal is genuine but whether the receipient named on the medal was present is another matter.

My gut feeling is that he was. The naming is not as was officially issued and is very neat engraving. I have looked at many examples of original naming and both the style and amount of detail engraved was limited. I think that this guy being a sergeant major wanted more detail addded and hence had it done himself which is very believable as generally all these medals were "doctored" to have a suspension ring added, so think that he would have had the engraving and ring added at the same time ?

Take a look at E bay , collectables, medals, 1815-1899
