Cluny Castle
« on: Thursday 21 April 11 02:14 BST (UK) »
I am researching from Canada, have found a Great Uncle who was the head Gardener at Cluny Castle, Aberdeenshire  from 1901 to 1938 .   Andrew McLeod.  I have found mention of him on this webpage:

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/historic/Collection_highlight_autumn08.shtml

.....where there is quite a bit of information abt the gardeners.

Where could I find  photos of the gardens there or of any gardening staff?
Also wondering if any one know where I could find a listing/transcriptions of the Cluny Castle Burial Grounds?

Thanks so much !

Heather

There is a cemetery at Cluny Church which is close to Cluny Castle.  If you look on the Aberdeen Family History website you will find they have
information on burial grounds in North East Scotland and a index of Memorial Inscriptions.

http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/

I live quite near the castle and the church  and if you want me to look in the churchyard just let me know.

As to photos I cannot promise anything but I will ask around and see if any locals might have anything.

ThankYou for the link to ANESFHS Avondee!

I searched my ancestor in that search engine but no hits, neither for his 2 wives.  So that probably answers my question abt wondering if they might have been buried in Cluny burial grounds.  So they must be buried somewhere where the transriptions are not yet done.

I was wondering if you know if there is still a Gardeners House at Cluny Castle?  Is so, I sure would appreciate a photo of it if anyone is going there.

I did locate the castle on Google Earth today but could not zoom in clearly enough to tell which building could have been the gardeners quarters.  There are 2  structures behind the castle in the shape of this: [  , one behind the other.  Maybe stables???   And another structure to the east of the castle that is long and looks like might have had gardens behind that , at least that is what is looks like in the 6 inch to the mile maps, but that could have been stables too and a riding paddock...  as you can see I am just guessing here !

I have a dream still of visiting Scotland someday

thanks again, Heather

Can I take it that Andrew McLeod died in Cluny in 1938. There is a burial record for an Andrew McLeod in Aberdour for 1938.

Annie Tough, spouse McLeod, died 1917.
Elizabeth Ann Fraser Davidson, spouse, McLeod died 1894, there is a burial for an Annie Davidson, in Cluny Churchyard in 1894.

You will get more information from "Scotlands people" for which you will have to buy credits.

Thanks Malky!

I do have Andrews death record from Scotlands People, he died June 17th 1938 , and had found that Aberdour index record too, thought I had found him but there is a months discrepancy there...Aberdour says May 23rd,    but maybe a error on the burial record???   It would make sense  if he was buried June 23rd.

I tried Google books to sse if the ANESFHS booklet for Aberdour was there, but its not. If I could see the transcription I might be able to ascertain if it is him.

I was not able to find Annie Tough burial though, thinking that would be a clue to Andrews. Elizabeth was his second wife. who was still alive in 1938.

I cannot locate where this Kirkyard of Aberdour is,  how near Cluny would it be?

If anyone has the ANESFHS AA102 booklet and could look up Andrew McLeods 1938 transcription I would sure appreciate it !!

"I cannot locate where this Kirkyard of Aberdour is,  how near Cluny would it be?"

Go to :- http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/
Work down until you see "MI Index", work along until you see "burial grounds in NE Scotland." Click on that, and a new page will open. It will give you the option to select a graveyard in the North East of Scotland. Select "Aberdour" and an arrow will show where it is. While the map is up, select "Cluny" and you will see where that is. That will give you an idea of the distance. (Approx 40 miles.)

Malky.

I had found that web page before, but did not notice the drop down list of burial grounds on the top right.  Very good ! and some have MI Listings/photos of the grounds too.
Thanks for pointing that out to me!
