Yes, I too thought German, at first ... but then the  "Mary Ann Margaret" got me thinking "Irish".      

So hopefully this family arriving in Canterbury (1878) is yours.  

*  Any idea of who raised this poor motherless child ... or where she lived during her childhood. ?

Charles re married the following year, she had a step mother and 3 further siblings.
Life continued to be hard for her. Going into service at 14. A marriage with violence. Having her children removed.

I am looking for Information on Mary Ann Wagner
She married Charles Alfred Bryant in 1890 in NZ had a child, Mary Ann Margaret and died that same year.
No record of a Birth certificate so she was probably an immigrant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
