Michael Carney from thornhill,mayo
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 19:20 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea  :-[ what sash my wifes grandfather has
in the 1911 census he says he was born in thornhill.
All records of births 1863 were destroyed so we cannot trace his ancestry.
 ???
Can anyone help???

Hello Rallso.  Do you have any marriage details i.e. his father's name?  There is a Michael Carney Baptism on the following websites.  You would have to pay to view -

www.mayoancestors.com - Michael Carney Baptised 1863
Father's initials: MC - Mother's initials: BC

www.brsgenealogy.com  - also has a Baptism for Michael Carney 1863

This is a very expensive way to find out if its your relative.  Euro 5 a search

Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864- all civil registration records survive and the index can be searched (free)-

Hello Rallso. Well at least it's ruled out the above Baptism.  On brsgenealogy there are 2 Michael Carney's with father Thomas -

a)  Michael Carney / church baptism / 1860 / County Mayo
b)  Michael Carney / civil birth / 1864 / County Mayo

one of these may or may not be yours.  Have you checked/viewed LDS film for the Thornhill area?  Do you have a LDS Family History Centre near you?

LDS = Latterday Saints (commonly known as Mormons). See here to find your nearest LDS library-

Here is an interesting website of baptisms in County Mayo with quite a few Carneys on it.
Also be sure to look for "Kearneys" too, as often the spellings are interchanged. ::)
