Omagh District Marriages
« on: Friday 11 June 04 13:07 BST (UK) »
I have just returned from a trip to Omagh and area in Northern Ireland. While there I did get the opportunity to do a little family history research but was not terribly successful in tracing my McCutcheon and Maguire roots as there were not many records available. I did not get to Belfast Register Office where most records are held. But I did get to the Omagh Register Office and was looking into the following names - McCutcheon, Maguire, McGuire, Johnston/Johnstone, Glass/Glasse and McFarland. The Omagh office has marriage records from about 1845 to 1920 or so - they are by no means complete (as there were some I already knew about but were not there) but I have copied lists for marriages for the above names. Most of these copies give the date, name of bride and groom and the place of the actual marriage.

If anyone is researching the above names and would like me to check the lists I have for a marriage I could check my copies. The books (2) at the Omagh office are easy to look at as all names are in alphabetical order and marriages can be easily looked up. Should anyone be successful and find I have these names on the lists I have - they could easily contact the Omagh Register Office to obtain a copy of the actual marriage registration. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the reference numbers that correspond to the registers BUT as I said they would be easily looked up the way the office has them filed.

The lists I have include McCutcheon males & their spouse, McCutcheon femailes & their spouses, McFarland males & their spouse, McGuire Males & their spouses, McGuire females & their spouses, Maguire females & their spouses, Maguire males & their spouses, Johnston/Johnstone males & their spouses, and Glass/Glasse males and their spouses.

Omagh District marriages - Johnstons

Thanks for your offer - would be keen to have any references to Johnston marriages - my Johnston family lived at Edergole County Tyrone, not far - I believe - from Omagh. Family includes Noble Johnston, born Edergole, Omagh, County Tyrone 1833 married Eliza Lammy of Tattymoyle, Omagh, County Tyrone (born 1829).

Hello - checked the lists I have and found this -

Noble Johnston married Elizabeth Lammy on 02/12/1852 (February 12 OR December 2??). Unfortunately the photocopy I have of the list si cut off and I can not name the place but if you contact the Register Office in Omagh where I found these marriages, they could look it up quite easily and send you a copy of the actual marriage record.

Hi, my gt gt grandfather James Duncan, a farmer, c1823 - 30 Nov 1907 of Reskaterriff, Clonavaddy, Co Tyrone was married to a Jane Johnston born c 1826. (marriage 24 Apr 1846). Could she be the daughter of Noble Johnston? Any information would be appreciated. I have James' will.

We could have a match!

Jane Johnston was the eldest daughter of Noble Johnston and Elizabeth Johnston - born Edergole, County Tyrone (about two miles sw of Omagh) about 1825.

While I have a lot of information on Jane's siblings, have very little info on her.

Will try and see if I can find out more.

Where is Clonavaddy?

Sorry for delay in replying - have been travelling during Sept-Oct.

I since have received a copy of Jane Johnston's (b 1826)wedding certificate dated 24/4/1846 - her father is named as John Johnston, farmer, Reskaterriff (which is about 4 or 5 miles NE of Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone). She married James Duncan, a baker living in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone (b 1823, Glasgow), son of John Duncan, also a baker.  The wedding took place at Brantry Parish Church (Aughnacloy) and one of the witnesses was a William Johnston (brother?). James Duncan obviously soon took over pa-in-laws farm as the 1901 and 1911 census have him as farmer and retired baker, his son James is also a farmer on the same farm (different cottage) whilst his son John is a baker & grocer in Aughnacloy. There is another son Theophilus Henry Duncan a grocer in Caledon. I occasionally go up to Dublin and visit the National Archives, I reckon it has taken me about 10 hours total so far sitting in front of a microfilm viewer to get this information. Not a pleasant task.

I may as well continue on the theme of the Duncan family (mainly Baptists) in Co. Tyrone, there may be someone out there...
James Duncan (b 1823 Glasgow) had the following children in Reskaterriff:
Janet Duncan m James Pinkerton (farmer) and had children: Jane b 6/1/1874, Janet b 16/2/1875, Christina b 8/8/1877 and James b 21/8/1879.

Christina Duncan (b c1860) m Thomas Taggart (b c1859 Co. Tyrone and son of John Taggart of Dernabane, farmer) and had children in Dernabane:
Susan Jane b 11/4/1889, Letitia Anne b 8/2/1891, John b 19/8/1892, Margaret Elizabeth b 24/2/1894, James John Duncan b 12/1/1897, Thomas b 23/1/1899, William David b 28/11/1902 and Henry Alexander Isaac Duncan b 6/6/1905. As an aside, the groom also had a live-in spinster sister, Letitia Ann Taggart b c1855 Co. Tyrone.

John Duncan, a baker and grocer (b c1847) m Eliza (b c1852 Co. Tyrone) and had children in Aughnacly: James b c1880, William b c1881, Jane S b c1882, Annie S b c1886, John b c1890, Lucy Francis b c1891 and David b c1892.

James Duncan, a farmer, Reskaterriff (c1852) married an unknown and had children Jane b c1884 and Robert James b c1886. The unknown wife died and James married Isabella b c1857 Co. Tyrone and had children Christina E b c1891, William David b c1893, John J b c1895 and Theophilus b c1898.

Theophilus Henry Johnston Duncan, a grocer in Caldon, b 17/4/1870 married Ann Jane Rea b 2/3/1870 Ballygawley, Co Tyrone on 29/9/1897 in Ballygawley and had children; Jane Marion Margaret b c1899, James Norman b c1900 and Theophilus David Gordon b 3/5/1905.

There was an unknown daughter who married a Henry Newell of Dungannon Co. Tyrone - still to trace.

There was William David Duncan - still to trace.

There was Margaret Martha Duncan b 16/8/1864 who remained a spinster.

Last but not least, there was Agnes Duncan b c1855 Glasgow, my gt grandmother who eloped with William James Rafferty.

Hi KHartley,
I am researching an ancestor, John McGuire, who came to Australia in the early 1850's. He may have been married to Sarah (don't know her maiden name) or a Mary (nee Grant) when he left Omagh.
Do you have any info on this man? I would be very grateful if you can check on this.
