George Swanson

I am trying to trace my great grandfather George Swanson. All the documentation that i have (marriage cert, death cert etc) shows that he was born in Middlesex / London about 1854. His parents were Charles and Anne. I have located the family in the 1861 census but I am unable to locate my George in the BMD index's, even after searching the years surrounding 1854 and spelling variants of the surname, such as Swanston. Is there anyone who can help me resolve this "mystery"?

If there is any doubt re when his parents married you could try under his mother's maiden name. Did he have any siblings? Have you found their birth registrations?

He could well just be missing from the indexes, as it was not mandatory for parents to register births until 1874.  Up until then it was the responsibility of the registrar and many births went unrecorded.

Max,

I don't know if you have tried the FreeBMD site, it helped me track down my Gr Grandfather after years of searching.

There is a George Swamson MarQ 1853 Bermondsey 1d 73, just stood out as an unusual spelling that might not be obvious.
