Catholic Burials

Can anyone tell me where my Catholic ancestors from 1890s onwards are likely to be buried in Edinburgh? They all lived and died in Leith but I don't think St Mary's has a graveyard. Thanks.

The likelihood is that they would be buried in Mount Vernon cemetery - this is the Catholic cemetery for Edinburgh. I'm not quite sure when it was opened but I think would be open by the 1890s.  If it was not then they would have had to be buried in the same cemeteries as the rest of the population in which case Rosebank or Seafield are the most likely choices.

Piershill I believe has a large areas cordoned off for those of "special" faiths who do not wish to be placed beside the others.

Hi Portybelle,

                     Mount Vernon is the safe bet, most of my ancestors and near family are buried there, I believe the main attraction was Margaret Sinclair who is going through the process of being made a Saint, however, her remains were transferred to St. Patrick's Chapel in the Cowgate Edinburgh.

Thanks for that. Do you know if there is a book listing those buried there? I have seen these mentioned on other threads. Having spent two hours searching Rosebank Cemetery yesterday for other Gt Gt Grdandparents who I know are there without success, it would be good to at least know if it was worth looking!

I only got through about half the cemetery in that time. Mind you, I did unexpectedly come across another set of Gt Gt GdPs so wasn't a total loss!

Hi Portybelle,

                     if you go in through the week and they are not busy they will look through the records for you, it is better if you have roughly the date they died and their proper names and ages but normally the names will be suffice, I have found the staff very helpful and if they have time will show you where to go, but be patient.
