George Beveridge Archibald b. 1886 or 1887 in Scotland
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 01:57 BST (UK) »
Searching for a great uncle that disappeared.  I have a 1917/1918 draft registration card for a George Beveridge Archibald born in Scotland and the last address in Scotland is correct.   The  registration is for County: San Louis Obispo State: California.  Could anyone look up a marriage for him or a census to give me some idea what happened to him.  He was my grandfather's brother and the family knows nothing about him.

Thanks,
bfw

The 1918 Draft Registration:
DoB: 24 May 1886, occupation: Miner
Nok: his mother from Gladstone Terrace, Fife

George Beveridge ARCHIBALD, birth registered 1887 Aberdour Fife.
I'm guessing - he is the one age 3 on the 1891 Census, and age 13 in 1901 -  in Aberdour with parents William & Margaret and a good number of siblings?

His mother was a BEVERIDGE?

Could this be him:

HMS "Hesperian", arrived Quebec 15 Aug 1909, out of Glasgow
9046 - George ARCHIBALD 22, single, Miner, Scotch
Never before in Canada.
Intended Occupation in Canada: Miner
Has been a Miner for 9 years.
Destination: Spences, BC
Religion: United Free

Also on the same ship, listed after him in this order are:
9045 - Archibald BEVERIDGE 27, Single
Never before in Canada.
Intended Occupation in Canada: Miner
Has been a Miner for 14 years.
Destination: Spences, BC
Religion: United Free

9047 - Thomas BEVERIDGE 33, Married
Has been to Canada before, 4 years (either "ago", or "for" 4 years)
Intended Occupation in Canada: Miner
Has been a Miner for 20 years.
Destination: Spences, BC
Religion: United Free

Cheers

In 1911 Canadian Census
http://automatedgenealogy.com/

Thomas BEVERIDGE is in  Comox-Atlin BC. Shows immigratrion year 1909.
His brother Archibald BEVERIDGE, immigrated 1909, is with him -  as is another brother Andrew who immigrated 1910. Thomas' wife & children are also there - all showing as arriving 1910, eldest child 5. All matches the 1909 Ship manifest nicely.

But no George ARCHIBALD in the house - I think he (the one from the ship) might be in Ontario, showing a Birthdate of May 1887 Scotland,  in a LINDSAY household, enumerated as a Cousin.

Does any of this tie in with what you know of your BEVERIDGE line?

Cheers

There is a possible match in the 1920 US Census. Fresno, California. George Archibald, born Scotland, age 36; emigrated 1917. He was an oil company teamster. I do not find a compatible match in 1930.

And California Deaths 1905-1939:

 ARCHIBALD   GEORGE      02   14   1909   ALAMEDA   110619
 ARCHIBALD   GEORGE      04   07   1914   SANTA CRUZ   290989
 ARCHIBALD   GEORGE   B   12   17   1925   LOS ANGELES   826136
 ARCHIBALD   GEORGE      11   17   1929   LOS ANGELES   1070672
 ARCHIBALD   GEORGE      10   19   1938   SANTA CLARA   1354217

There are no ages in this index. If you suspect one of these is correct, you would have to order the certificate to verify. I do not see a match in the 1940-2000 California death index.

Good luck!

Thank you Ambly and Omaha Boy.  Some things are clearer and some not so much.  Yes, George's mother was a Beveridge and married William Archibald. Margaret was living at Gladstone Terrace in Crossgates when she died.  I never knew about the Beveridge cousins that went to BC.  Three of the Archibald sons went to BC also one being my grandfather but not until the early 20's.  I will search for further info here in Canada.   Thank you for the lead.

George though is still a mystery man.  Why would he register for the draft in the U.S. if he came to Canada?  I will look for a migration record for him.   I have the Archibald family connected to the Lindsay family in the 1700's but didn't follow the Lindsay lline as it wasn't too direct.  Another avenue to explore.

Thank you again.

The 1920 Census also says that he filed papers for naturalization.

I see a border crossing from Canada at Oroville, Washington from 3 Sep. 1917 for a George Archibald born Conilbristle, Scotland.  It looks like he was age 36, single, a coal miner, last permanent residence - Merritt, British Columbia, previously in the US from (date left blank) to July 1914 in Washington.  It says he came to Montreal on 16 Aug. 1909 on the Hesperian, so that seems to match the passenger list found above.  He was 5'9" tall with a medium complexion, dark brown hair, and green eyes.  His final destination looks like Conatchee?, Washington.  His brother Thomas Archibald was living in Merritt, BC.
