Hi Jan

What was his occupation on his marriage certificate? If he was a Merchant Seaman in 1911 then he may not be on the census.

What are the names of the 4yo twins? and have you looked for them on the census? Keep in mind that if they were born in 1907 they might only be 3 on census night. It depends upon the actual date of birth and the date of the census.

Andy

Andy just beat me to it. I think that you may find the wife and twins by themselves.

I've had a look but can't readily see them...sorry

The twins were born on 2 jan 1907 but there names on there birth cert was Hugh & colin Grant there mum and dad got married in Oct 1907 so there manes might have been Grant on the 1911 census they changed there name to McIlwraith 1937
but the mother name would have been McIlwraith

Hi

If you do a search for Colin McIlwraith age 4 and select Surname Variants and include Second Person Forename of Hugh you get 1 match. That might be worth looking at.

I assume you've considered the fact that the name might have been misspelt McIlwraith might have been McIlraith, McIlrath etc. Try using the wildcard and see what you come up with ie McIl*th in Lanarkshire. Always worth a shot.
McNaught, Robertson, Wighton, Duncan, Dawes, Fyffe, French, Getty, Herdman, Jelly, Gourlay, Vickers, Armstrong, Ruffell.
