John BOAG C1780 Scotland
« on: Saturday 16 April 11 10:03 BST (UK) »
Any help would be gratefully accepted in tracing John who was born in Scotland about1780 and died there some time between 1824 and 1860.  He married Margaret Williamson in 1805 in Uphall, West Lothian and had 9 children - John, James, David, Agnes, Margaret, Thomas, Mary, William & Catherine.   Margaret was born about 1782 in Uphall and died 30 March 1860 in New Monkland.

John has eluded me for many years and to track him down eventually would be such a thrill.

Regards

Hi

Any idea what John's occupation/trade was? (perhaps it was mentioned on her death record,  or on any post-1855 records of their children)?

Cheers

Hi Ambly

According to his daughter Catherine's death certificate, John had been a "wagon driver".  Most of his male descendants also worked on the railways in some form or other.

I see Margaret in 1851, I believe - with her son John?
If she was a widow then, it narrows down the time frame for when John died.

1851:  West Meadow Head, New Monkland, Lanarkshire
Head: Margaret WILLIAMSON 68, b Broxburn, Linlithgow
Son: John BOAG 45, Labour Cool Pit, b Broxburn, Linlithgow

Thank you so much, Ambly.    This must be the right Margaret as I have her dying at "Wester Meadowhead" & buried in East Chapel churchyard.    Is it Wester Meadowhead of West Meadow Head as you say - I don't know enough about Scottish place names to be sure.    Do  you know if there are records for this churchyard which might give me more info?

I have John born on 5 Feb 1806 but in Uphall.  When he died on 11 Mar 1863 he was single and a Pithead man.

This had helped me pin down a more accurate date of death of John senior and I very much appreciate you giving time to hlep me out.

Regards
Jeannette

Hi Jeannette
You're welcome, happy to help!

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I think the following is  Margaret in 1841, with her sons John jnr & William (the latter b 1822 Airdrie per IGI).

1841: Graham Street - Airdrie, New Monkland
John BOAGY 30, Labourer - N (not born in Lanarkshire)
Margaret BOAGY 55 - N (not born in Lanarkshire)
William BOAGY 15 - Y (born in Lanarkshire)

Ages would be rounded to down to the nearst 5 years in 1841 Census.

Your Margaret b abt 1782 - age abt 58 in 1841; so would be rounded down to 55
Your John jnr  b Feb 1806 - just turned age 35 @ Census 1841; however, if his age was stated as 34 (he or Mum forgot he'd just had a birthday?), he'd get rounded down to 30.
Your William b.May 1822 Aidrie, just turned 19 @ 1841 Census and age would get rounded down to 15.

So this places, I think  John Snr's death as somewhere between very late Dec 1823/Jan 1824* and Jun 1841?

Cheers

* Daughter Catherine was born 17 Oct 1824 Airdrie. If she was very overcooked, she might have been concieved very late Dec 1823?)
