Hi Catherine
Thank you for offering your time — much appreciated.
I would like any info you can find on Thomas Fennessy (? b before 1826) and Mary Ann or Marianne Cleary b 1830/31. I don't know where either was born but they married in 1847 at the Kildare registry office — he was a protestant and she was a catholic. They were in Tipperary when my g grandmother Kate was born in 1853 (siblings Mary, Hubert, John James and Charlotte Ann), and then moved to Cork where (I think) Thomas became the railway superintendant.
I know Mary Ann's father was a farmer named John Cleary who died before 1847.
I'm especially interested in Mary Ann's mother as she is my direct matrilineal line.
Not much to go on, but anything you can find would be great.
Cheers, Rian.

Hi Rory

my auntie Collette (nee Kavanagh) was married to Kevin Gaffney.  They lived in Dublin 4, Irishtown and Ringsend.  The Gaffney family is very large there, I know that Kevins mother married twice and between the two families they had 24 children !!  a lot of them are still there.  Kevins mother lived until she was 102 and was reported in the Independant newspaper.  Which names are you looking for and I will ask my aunt and my mother who also knows them very well.  Maybe a shot in the dark but you never know !

Carol,
My Wife's mother was Mary Kavanagh (nee Gaffney) 1923 - 2002 and she lived in Tolka Cottages, Old Finglas Road, in Dublin.  Mary's father Patrick Gaffney 1901 - 1992, his father was also Patrick (1866-1946) born in Watling Street  and lived in Kileek North Dublin. His father was James (1834 - bef 1901).  My wife says that she thinks she has some Gaffney relatives living in North Wall and Irishtown/Ringsend but doesn't know any of their names.  Does this make any sense to you or can you make any connections.

Carol,
Gaffney is my wife's mothers maiden name. She was Mary Kavanagh nee Gaffney 1923 - 2002 from the Old Finglas Road, her father was Patrick Gaffney 1901-1992 also from the Old Finglas Road. His father was Patrick 1866 - 1946 died in Kileek, N Dublin. His father was James also from Kileek 1934 - bef 1901. My wife remembers talk of relatives from Ringsend and North Wall area but doesn't know any details.  Could there be a connection with yours, if so I have a good deal of info that I can share with you if you're interested.  I would also welcome any info you might have for me.

Hi Rory

sorry for the delay.  I dont know if there is a definite connection between your Gaffneys and my Aunts, but feel that if your wife remembers relatives living in the Ringsend/Irishtown part of Dublin that they would more than likely be related to the Gaffneys there now.  I am not personally researching the name Gaffney, but I will try and find out as much as I can from my Aunt and Mother, they both grew up with the Gaffneys.  I will talk to them at the weekend and forward any information I have.  A couple of things, there is a community newspaper which is well worth searching through the archives on line that is www.news4.ie

I feel like a big advert for this paper as I have told so many people about it !  It is a very good source of information for the areas of Ringsend/Irishtown and Sandymount, often showing old photos and printing letters from readers.  I have come across the Gaffney family in there many times.  Also another name associated with the Gaffney family is Egan.  One of the Egan boys was a heavyweight boxer who is friends with Mike Tyson, the two of them appear in one of news 4 editions.  The Egans are cousins to the Gaffneys.

I will let you know as soon as I talk to them and send any information on.

Cog,
The Gaffney's were all associated with boxing.  Jackie Gaffney (just recently deceased) represented Ireland in boxing in the 1930's and my wife's grandfather and brothers were all into boxing. Could be a connection.  Will wait until u speak to yoour relatives.

Hi Tory

sorry for delay, I have not forgotton about you,
I am waiting for my aunt (Gaffney) to return from
her travels in Wexford.  She is due back this week
so I can find out more for you.  One little bit I
got from my mom was my aunts mother in law
was named Molly Gaffney, she had been widowed
previous to this marriage and was called Riley.
She had 24 children some Rileys and some Gaffneys,
so the Gaffneys from Ringsend are also related to
Rileys of Ringsend.  I know its a bit sketchy but
will get a clearer picture when I get it  from the
horses mouth !
