BARNES in Essex
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 23:52 BST (UK) »
I am having difficulties tracing my BARNES family in Essex. I am particularly interested in Joseph Thomas BARNES b 1842 who married Mary JENKIN, and his father Joseph BARNES born c1804 who married Mary PORTER.  I can trace the family back to the Stock/Buttsbury area with links to Ramsden Crays.  Joseph had a brother John, born c1807 (both born in Buttsbury) and John's family moved to Mountnessing.  Is anyone else researching this particular BARNES family?  I have most census returns (apart from difficulty locating Joseph in 1861) but cannot identify who or where John and Joseph's parents were.  Any assistance would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
Christine

Hi Christine

My gg grandfather was Benjamin Barnes According to his marriage certificate he came from Chipping Ongar I have not been able to prove his birth yet but I do know that a lot of the Barnes's moved to Colchester from that area( which is not a million miles from Buttersby) so  you could try widening your seach

Hi Ronnie

Thanks for your reply.  John's family moved to Mountnessing and I am still tracing that side.  Joseph, from whom I am descended, was in farming but when he retired moved in with his son George who was a publican.  They moved to Stonden Massey and Ongar and other sons moved to the Clerkenwell and West Ham areas.  I have been unable to trace John and Joseph back prior to Stock & Buttsbury so at this stage am not aware of any other siblings which could tie in with the other Essex BARNES families.

I am still hoping someone may be able to help me break down my "pre Stock Buttsbury" brick wall  :-\

Christine

Hi Christine,
I have just notice your query about Joseph Barnes who was born in 1804 in Buttsbury Essex. He happens to be my 3rd Great Grandfather. His son William who was born in 1834 in Ramsden Crays Essex married Eliza Wright. They departed Southampton on the ship 'Raleigh' arriving on the 11 December 1854 in Launceston Tasmania.

As far as I know, Joseph had two other sons George born c1837 Stock and Thomas born c1842 also in Stock. It was Thomas who married Mary Jenkins. The only difference my Joseph married a Sarah from the censuses 1841 to 1861. If you would like to compare notes just send me a message.

Wendy

Have checked parish records in buttsbury, ramsden Bellhouse and crays, mountnessing, ingatestone, billericay, stock, downham, margaretting. No Barnes baptisms from the lTe 1790s through to about 1815, I'm afraid 😉
Jamiesons, Martins and McGonigals of Coleraine, Londonderry
and
Cullens, Grahams and Challenors of Dublin county and city.
