MELHUISH surname
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 20:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

One of my ancestors, John Parr (b1725) married a Joan Melhuish (B1730-35) in Crediton, Devon on the 25/8/1746. Does anybody have any information on the Melhuish family as i would love to go back further with this branch as i think it is an unusal name. Thanks

Familysearch.org has a Joan Melhuish, baptism date 1735 in Spreyton, Devon. Father shown as Joshua Melhuish.

Spreyton is about 5 miles wast of Crediton.

I doubt that the Spreyton baptism is correct (1735) if she married in 1746. MELHUISH is quite a common name in Devon, particularly around Cruwys Morchard. The IGI lists 111 Joan MELHUISH events across all Devon parishes, and the IGI only partially represents Devon records.
I would suggest initially that you should search nearby parishes - the following link gives parishes within a 5 mile radius of Crediton http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/places?DEV,SS836002,5,Crediton
I would also suggest trying to locate Joan Melhuish PARR's burial - it 'may' give her age at death which should help.
