1911 Edinburgh/Midlothian Prison census

The 1911 census of Edinburgh/Midlothian contains a Frank Aitken b. 1862. he is shown as an inmate. Can anyone tell me if there is a source I can look up to find the reason for his incarceration and if his being an inmate in 1911 is the reason he ended up in Australia in July, 1911? When you say he showed as 'inmate', inmate of where? Did he show in prison? Sometimes this term can be used for someone who was admitted to a poorhouse.

PS: Just realise you have prison in the title  :P So guess that is where you have found him!

This is one site where you can sometimes find details of criminal trials. Had a quick search, can't easily see anything for him. The search is spelling specific, you might want to try other spelling variations www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ Click on 'phrase' for search to narrow down results.

Probably Calton Gaol, as Saughton was not built until 1913.

If you look at the previous page showing Frank Aitken you will find that the two pages are those in a Lodging House in Leith.   Most are Dock Labourers, however there were 3 females, two of whom were the Lodging House Manager (Fleet Reserve ?) , Douglas Shannon's wife and daughter.

Not sure why he would be described as an 'inmate' rather than lodger, Jim. Sometimes the term creeps in to other usage (other than related to prison/workhouse or other institution).

The address of Shannon on the birth of his daughter in 1910 was 20 Shore, Leith which according to the PO directory was the "New Ship Lodging House".   The instructions for filling up the census form for institutions was to name the "inmates" after officials, servants and their families.
