James Burns 1861 Scotland Census
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 14:13 BST (UK) »
Hello!  Hoping someone can help me! I've been looking all night for this guy.

I'm looking for James Burns born 1838 Ireland (no idea where) in a 1861 Census.

In 1851 Census he was 13 living in Whithorn/Wigtownshire with his parents Oney (Owen) Burns & Margaret Burns (both parents born in Ireland) and siblings Michael (born in Ireland) + John/Margaret/Eliza (born Glasserton, Wigtownshire) + Agnes/Patrick (born Whithorn, Wigtownshire).

I've looked on Scotlands People and can't seem to find anything in the Wigtownshire area.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Nici :)

I take it you have the rest of the family in the 1861 census? Some of the children, including your James are not at home. There are a couple of James Burns born around the right time frame but I'm not sure how you could narrow down which might be yours. Do you know when and who James married?

Can I ask what lead you to James Burns? Is he an ancestor?

Someone may have other ideas, but I'm not sure what to suggest to work out which, if any of the James Burns in the 1861 census are yours.

... of course, yours may have moved or died?

Hi Ruskie,  Yes, he is an ancestor.  James Burns's father Oney (Owen) Burns is my Dad's GG Grandfather.

I've tracked all the other children not living with Oney in 1861;

John Burns - have most info on in DOB - DOD - MAR - Census.
Michael Burns - 1861 Census in Penningham - then he married Helen Nixon 1862.
Agnes Burns - 1861 Census in Kirkinner - have all her info as well.

Maybe I'll have to go through and check all the James Burns's in the 1961 Census I located at Scotlands People.  There is 18 of them from;

Ayr  -  Renfrew x 3  -  Banff  -  Dundee City/Angus   -   Angus x 2  -  Stirling  -  Glassgow City/Lanark x3  -  East Lothian  -  Selkirk  -  Ed City/Midlothian  -  Port Glassgow.

Thanks for your feedback.  Regards Nici

I think there are 5 or 6 about the right age, on the 1861 transcriptions on Ancestry and from memory 3 are married. In many cases these are pretty awful transcriptions, so could easily be mistranscribed and missed.

Thing is James may not necessarily have stayed in the area, may have married or died, immigrated, moved to England, or back to Ireland .... anything ... I suppose all you have to go on is place of birth place and age - you don't even know his occupation.  :-\

Have you tried searching Scotland's People for a death for him (using his MMN if you know it) but not specifying area? I entered James Burns b 1838 +/- 5 years, searching 1855 to 1891 and got 41 matches over 2 pages, so not too many. You might need to search 1851 to 1855 on the OPR's as well as extending the end year. It's really all I can think to suggest ... sorry.

Although you can't find him in 1861 have you searched for him in 1871 and later? Sometimes the odd person can't be found in a census or two.
