Dr. John Scott (1814-1856)

Dr. John Scott (1814-1856) Born in Selkirk, Dr. Scott became one of the first doctors and surgeons in Berlin, Canada Dr. Scott was the very first reeve of the newly incorporated Village of Berlin in 1854. He was largely responsible for the Village of Berlin becoming the County seat of local government. Originally buried in the old Swedenborgian Church Cemetery on Church Street he was later moved to Mount Hope Cemetery. Does anyone know where about he was born and when he left for Canada?

Just in case Selkirk and Roxburghshire got lost in the translation or passage of time  , there is this IGI entry, not sure if connected but from something I read, birth month for John Scott given as January 1814:

John SCOTT b. 25 JAN 1814 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburgh
Parents: Charles SCOTT and Margaret DOUGLAS

Bryan  Do you realise someone born in Selkirk is a "Souter" which is the old name for a shoemaker!  Very apt name in the circumstances.!!
Sorry but Lilliesleaf has always been Roxburghshire and now classed as Lilliesleaf, Melrose Rox, in postal area.
Selkirk Selkirkshire usually includes Ettrick.Yarrow ,Ashkirk and even Galashiels. My reocrds show  3  1814 births for John Scott. 1. christened 20-2-1814 Ettrick to James Scott/Euphan Huntly.  2. born 24-11-1814 yarrow to John Scott/Isobel Barclay and 3. born 25-12-1814 Ashkirk to James Scott/Elizabeth Johnstone.The OPRs dont show any births in actual Selkirk in 1814.
Where did he study.Check Uni records. Any family with middle names of possible grandparents as is the scottish system?Was his wife scottish?

I couldn't see any Selkirk births or christenings either Allan. The only facts that could help so far were the January 1814 birth, father Charles and the uncle's name. The letters to his uncle Andrew Redford where sent from Canada in the mid 1830s. His uncle and family look to have remained in Scotland. This might help in pinpointing any family.

I haven't been able to find any other family details for him and the US 1850 census only showed him, a surgeon by occupation, with no family.

Come back to this again to see if anything else shows. I'm back full circle to possible parents being a Charles Scott and Margaret Douglas  These parent names come up on on a marriage in Blenheim, Waterloo Ontario:

Archibald Scott, aged 46 b. Scotland. Parents Charles Scott and Margaret Douglas. Married a Jessie Rogers, aged 33 b. Scotland. Marriage date 5 May 1865.

I saw a reference to Blenheim in that link I posted earlier regarding John Scott (I think it was that link that I posted earlier, I looked at a few!).

Andrew Redford was buried in Lilliesleaf Feb 1855 aged 65yrs . He was a tailor with a wife Janet Grieveand a son James.
Being the uncle i would have thought he married a Scott not a Grieve or do you think the "Uncle was Charles brother ?

Do you think Dr John studied Medicine in Edinburgh.
