Hi Val,

My name is Terry, my grandmother Lillian Helen Laurie(nee Harris) McMah is your cousin, Grannys mother was Margaret Annie Laurie the oldest sister of your Dad Herbert PJ Laurie..Here is a list of the all the children of William & Mary Laurie (nee O Shaughnessy)
Margaret Ann LAURIE b: 1871 in Braidwood, NSW  married John Thomas Harris 1899
Elizabeth Ann LAURIE b: 1872 in Braidwood, NSW
Frances M. LAURIE b: 1878 in Braidwood, NSW
Ada Julia LAURIE b: 1880 in Braidwood, NSW
Bertha LAURIE b: 1881 in Braidwood, NSW
Christina M. LAURIE b: 1884 in Braidwood, NSW
 Herbert P. J. LAURIE b: 1886 in Braidwood, NSW

Granny's Mum known as Annie( your Auntie) passed away in  December 29, 1933.   Her mother (your grandmother) Mary passed away June 12th1910 I have a funeral card photo that I can send you (though it is not very clear, I am afraid) and your Grandfather William well he is our mystery man.

I know that William Laurie(4) & brother Thomas (2) arrived in Australia with their parents on July 9th 1849 aboard the Scotia Father: Thomas LAURIE b: 1817 in Tynson, Dumfreshire, Scotland and died in Braidwood in 1884
Mother: Jane DAVIDSON b: 1817 in Dunlop, Ayr, Scotland, and known as "Jean" died in 1902 at Braidwood/ Majors Creek I can send you a copy of the transcript from the immigration records and that Thomas already had a sister in the colony ( thats an intersting story in itself)

Thomas and Jane went on to have to have another five children with some dying at an early age, though I must say I have kind of got stuck and moved onto other  sections of the family tree so I don't know as much about the Laurie side as I would like.  I know nothing whatsoever about Mary O Shaughnessy your grandmother except when she died, I haven't been able to find out when she came out to Australia or if she was born here or anything???

Did you know your cousins when you were growing up?  I will need to send you a personal message with my email address so that I can send the info I do have and perhaps you might have some stories you recall.  It is so great to hear from one of Grandmums cousin, honestly (longevity seems to be in the genes)  I hope you are well .  Anyhow Thank you...and hope to hear again from you.

Kind Regards
Terry

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the information, I am not sure where this William fits in, our Bill was born in 1845, so he would have been younger in 1894 , 49years only, which would fit with the bushranging death story.

Yet you say this William Laurie was 73, so this is very confusing, so maybe he was our Bill"s Uncle (Thomas's brother) I will do some more research.  I wonder if his parents were William & Jane Gibson the same as Thomas? (our Bills father???)

Thank you so many questions I am now inspired to continue searching. May I ask where you got this the inscription from?

Yours kindly
Terry

How wonderful to have 'met' some extra family on Rootschat  :)  Val, you will need to make two more posts before you can use the Personal Message facility on Rootschat.  I'm not sure, Terry, if your PM to Val would go through as she has only made one post.  Hope it has!

I'm just adding two snippets from TROVE which you may already have.

Obits from two papers for W E (Bill) LAURIE, 1951

Braidwood was the town where BMD registrations would be located for Majors Creek which is about 16k away.  Majors Creek area began as a farming area until the 1850s when gold was discovered.

I know this thread is old but wondering if anyone has any information on William Edward Laurie, Mary O'Shaughnessy, their parents or children.  I am a descendant of their daughter Christina May Laurie and we have no information whatsoever on this side of the family.  Any photos/stories/information would be much appreciated! I hope to hear a reply soon.

Thanks
Stacey

Welcome to Rootschat, kurtsta.

There is quite an amount of information re this family on this thread.  You might consider making notes and a timeline for the family and then working out what else you want to know. It's a bit tricky with so many Williams.  ;D

For example, the first reply from Dundee gives the immigration details for William (the William born abt 1845) and his parents.

Quote:
The immigration record for the Scotia arriving NSW in 1849

Thomas LAURIE, 32, farm labourer, born Tynron, Dumfrieshire, parents William and Jane (both dead), Presbyterian, read and write, relative in the colony a sister Mary(?) LAURIE married to David HASTINGS(?)
Jane LAURIE, 32, housekeeper, born Dunlop, Ayr, parents -- and Ellen DAVIDS-,  mother living at Dunlop, Presbyterian, read and write
Sons William, 4 and Thomas, 2, both born at Largs, Ayr

An on-line  public tree suggests that Mary Elizabeth O'SHAUGHNESSY was born in Ireland around 1850.

It really depends what you want to find next.

TROVE is worth searching as there are mentions of the LAURIE family of Gympie.
For example; an In Memoriam notice for Mary LAURIE (nee O'SHAUGHNESSY)
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15360905

Search page of TROVE here:
