Crew Lists - George Charles COLE - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 10:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, Look-up Request Please.
My father George Charles Cole (now deceased), b. 2 Nov 1925, Kingston, Surrey, England.  Royal Navy WW2. Came out to Australia after WW2, may have come from England or Canada, pretty sure he went back to England after being in Canada, may have also arrived via the U.S.  Believe the period was between 1945 and 1952 (when he married my mother in Victoria, Australia).  Apparently he jumped ship, but I have no idea which ship or whether it was the first ship he actually came out to Australia on.  He did work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme in NSW before he married my Mum.  He was a Painter and Decorator by trade. I'm sorry I have no other information to narrow this down.

Kindest Regards,
Penny

Hi Penny,

The Ministry of Defence holds the records of service personnel after 1923.  If you don't have a copy, this link will tell you how to apply for a copy as next of kin
http://www.rootschat.com/links/09es/

If he came to Australia as crew it is unlikely that you will find any information readily available for that period.  You would have to access the shipping records at the National Archives yourself.  To find crew agreements you have to know the name of the ship and it's official number as that is how the records are arranged.

On the UK outbound passenger indexes there is a George C. COLE born 1926 travelling from London to Adelaide in 1949.  You would need to purchase credits to view the digital image, as they sometimes give extra identifying information such as an address in England, and occupation.

This person shows up on the NAA passenger index as arriving on the Mooltan to Adelaide via Fremantle.

hi penny
further to dundee,s post this is the record detail in emmigration records so if this is him he couldn,t have jumped ship . more likely a ten pound pom  ;D
george c  cole occ painter address 80 leyton rd london sw 19  left eng 27 april 1949  ship mooltan .
as to the service record if you go to this site  www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html  from there you can download the forms  you will need a death cert for him and they cost £30 also expect quite a wait as there is a back log of several months but well worth the wait i,m sure .
best wishes

Hi Dundee (Debbie) and t mo (Trevor),

Thank you so much, you have no idea how long I have been searching for this information.  I already have his service record, so thank you so much on heads up on where to find it.

But the details you have for 1949 seem to be spot on, he did live at 80 Leyton Rd, in Wimbledon SW19 and he was a Painter by Trade. Where did you find the emigration record or was it also on the National Archives site?

Kindest Regards,
Penny

i did try looking for him regarding going to canada or the usa but nothing came up  what makes you think he went there before aus , could he have been in the merchant navy for a short time between the end of the war and coming to aus .

Hi Penny,

If you click on the links in my first post they will take to you the online sites where you can search for passenger names.

If you goes to this link  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0cmc/  you will be able to read lots of interesting newspaper articles about the migrants from the Mooltan who disembarked in SA.

Hi t mo (Trevor),

I don't have access to find my pass, only ancestry and GR.  The only reason I said it may be Canada is because he was injured during WW2 a boat he was on was torpedoed and he almost lost his leg and ended up in Vancouver for about 12 months, so I wasn't sure whether he went back to England or not. Also I though maybe he arrived via the U.S., just wasn't sure.

Again thank you so much.

Regards,
Penny

hi penny
looking at your reply to my questions  does it say in his service record why he would have been taken to canada for recuperation from injury were they on convoy duty or some such .
