RIDD .. South Molton (1851)

I wonder if someone could help me trace a William RIDD born circa 1846 on the 1851 census please?

His Mother was JANE RIDD .. and according to William's MC was a Spinster, so I'm not expecting to find a Father. (he married in 1872)

I think I have him on the 1861 census, but I can't make out what Marrital status is shown for Jane, but there is a "Sister in Law" there called Ann Avery ... they are living at East Street, Private House.  William is 14 and a cabinet maker ..... (((((((  I'm not 100% this is the right census though, as he maintains his occupation as a Painter/House decorater throught he later census years. ))))))

On the 1861 he's shown as being born in Bishops Nympron (if that helps) Class: RG9; Piece: 1486; Folio: 31; Page: 15

When William got married in 1872, his address was shown as East Street, South Molton.

    I've checked on FindMyPast and the census is clearer .. they are Head - Jane Ridd - UNMARRIED ......  and Ann Avery - Sister in Law - UNMARRIED ...

How can that be ?? How can you have a SIL if you're unmarried ??  PLUS 4 children !!!!

I'm afraid I can't answer your question but the name Ridd is of interest, as there is an Edgar Clinch Rid(d) buried in the same grave as 3 of my ancestors at Ford Park cemetary, Plymouth. I've no known connection with this chap but was wondering if the name was of any significance to you?

Don't forget that at that time the term in-law was often used to imply stepchild or stepsister/brother.
The 1871 census also shows them both as unmarried and Ann AVERY as sister-in-law to Jane. William is a painter aged 24.
According to the 1841 census, Jane's parents were William & Jane RIDD.

this family is confusing ... I don't have Jane Ridds Parents ... (as yet) but I have her as single on all the census years, and Ann Avery as her SIL on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census returns.  I have William ... he also married a Sarah Jane Ridd (Ridd was her MN) and Sarah Janes Parents were William & Sarah Ridd.

I am almost certain the family is linked - I just haven't been able to find that essential piece of the jigsaw though.... gggrrrr

HA HA .. sometimes .... I am determined to find the family link here ..... they HAVE to be related .. all from the same village with the same surname   hmmmm
