I am not sure what the writing under the word 'sergeant' signifies.

Thank you

It is his regiment. Appears to be 84 Foot. I.e. The 84th Foot.

Graham.

Thanks very much all of you.

I'll have to see what I can find out about it. I've looked briefly in google and can't find anything that may relate to my ancestor's period as he wasn't born until the 1790s. I haven't a clue about regimental kind of stuff!

I hope I'm right in reading it as George McCartney, as there is a record in The National Archives catalogue  WO 97/938/8  for George McCartney born Minigarf, Galway served 84th Foot discharged aged 44, dates 1794 to 1815, so born c 1771.

Should be on Findmypast.

It's worth reading the National Archives guide at

I had just found this on the National Archives site, but can't seem to navigate round the site!

THis could very well be my GGGG Grandfather George McCartney. He was married 1819 in Sorn, Ayrshire, but could have been born in Ireland. If this is him he would've been 20 years older than his wife. I know his mother Jannet was born in Scotland and was living in Scotland in 1841, but people move about!

Thank you for the link, I'll open it and see if I can find anything more.

Thank you
Julie

A bit more checking suggests that is the only possible George from 84th Foot.

The website and the catlogue can be a bit daunting. To get to that record, start at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Go to catalogue ( halfway down on right)

Type WO 97/938/8 into the box above "goto Reference" , then click on goto Reference.

For useful guides, start at home page. Click on "records" - the purple box in the middle. Then either use "research guides" link on right, or click on "looking for a person" top left

I have eventually got to the record through the National Archives and ending up on Find My Past where I've viewed the discharge records.

If I could just find his birth or death to see if it ties in with this George who was born in 1771 it would be great. I have looked for his death on the Scotlands People site, but with no luck. He married in Ayrshire, and his wife died in Glasgow in 1865.

Thanks for all this help
