I agree Geoff. If you look on earlier census returns it's definitely Carlton.

Furthermore, I don't know if it's linked but there's an Elizabeth CARLTON who married George SUTTON in the Thorne registration district in 1861.

They were in the same household in 1861 RG9/3526/5/3

IGI has Elizabeth CARLTON and George SUTTON married on 8 October 1861 at Amcotts, Lincolnshire. Her father's name is given as John CARLTON. This is the same as Hannah CARLTON's spouse in later census returns.

The only thing in doubt is probably the point when George SUTTON left the scene.  Perhaps it was before 1871.

1871 census shows George SUTTON as being married and lodging in Gainsborough RG10/3445/66/28

Possible deaths:
March qtr 1876
George SUTTON, aged 40, Thorne district

December qtr 1882
Elizabeth SUTTON, aged 40, Thorne district

From parish records All Saints Belton
George Sutton age 20 father James of Crowle married Elizabeth Carlton age 18 father John of Belton married 8 oct 1861.
