Hello Cheeks, and welcome to RootsChat!

Just to give us an idea of dates, is this the marriage?

Marriages Dec 1896
THORLEY  Charles Henry
TURNER  Annie
Shardlow 7b 875

Are you looking for information about Annie before she married, or are you looking for the couple's children, etc?

Thanks for the Welcome.

I am trying to trace my family history.

Ethel Thorley (c1892) -  there is some confusion over her name.  Her death certificate has her maiden name as Thorley but birth register records suggess that all her childrens birth cert state that their mothers maiden name was Turner.  So I am guessing she started life as Ethel Turner.

1901 census has an Ethel Turner living with the Thorley family aged 9 and down as the sister-in-law of the head.  So I am guessing that Annie (1865) and Ethel Turner are sisters.  With the big age gap possibly mother and daughter.  Looking for confirmation that my assumptions are correct and trying to pin down Annie and Ethel's parents.

Any help and advice much appreciated.

Also - just to confuse

her death cert states her name was Harriet Ethel Thorley  but I cant find any record for that or Turner.  She was known as Ethel.

I can find a birth record in Derby about the right time for Ethel Harriet Turner.

I'm going to split your query off and put it on the Derbyshire board where hopefully someone will be able to help.

1901 census does not describe Ethel as "sister in law" - no relationship to head of household is given

1901
10 Leicester St Derby
Charles H Thorley Head M 35 Fireman Brewery Derby
Annie wife M 36 Little Eaton Derby
Elsie daughter 10 Derby
Ethel Turner 9 Little Eaton Derby
William Thomas Thorley son 9 Derby
RG13 3220 142 26

Pure guesswork - but by the order the children are on census and p.o.b. it would seem very possible that Ethel could be Annie's daughter and the other children were Charles' from a previous marriage???

Sorry the 1911 census states this not 1901

Also this status states that they have been married for 14 years.  So guess you are right that Elsie and William are probably not Annies children and explain the confusion about William being the same age as Ethel.

Hi,

We are not allowed to post details of 1911 census - copyright issues - so it may be best to delete the details - and just leave the statement that she is sister in law in 1911

I am looking for Annie in earlier census - not found a definate yet
