Peoples/ Peebles
« on: Friday 22 April 05 20:29 BST (UK) »
I would love to find out who my great grandfather's parents were, however there is one problem: he was an orphan and was adopted. His name was Alexander Peoples and he was born early 20th century (I believe). He married Maggie McClure and had three daughters.
My grandmother recalls him telling her that he remembered being brought to see a dying woman in hospital as a child. This may have been his mother. He fought in WW2 and was captured. He lived to be 91. That is all I know about him.
Can anyone help?  8)

Hello Tiger Lily,

There may be more than these two methods of approach regarding orphans and adoption -
A. No living parents and no living relatives. Adopted from an orphanage.
B. No living parents but brought into the family circle of living relatives and adopted by them.
Somehow or other these questions require answers
1. Where did Alexander marry Maggie ?
2. What religion were Alexander and Maggie.
3. When did Alexander die ?
4. Where did Alexander die ?
5. Why is this posted in Co. Down ?
6. Was Peoples his birth name or adopted name ?
7. In which of the services did Alexander serve in WWII ? His name should appear on record.
I think there was an upper age limit after which men could not enter the services in WWII

Thanx 4 replying,
I can answer a few of these questions without further research. I know that he was adopted from an orphanage but not by a family member. I believe that he married Maggie in the mid to late 1920's, in Lisburn (with a big ?). He definately had some sort of link to Lisburn and his wife's mother's family came from there. I believe that they were Presbyterian. He died in Lisburn and this was in the 1980's (between 1983 and 1988). I know he was in the army but I don't know what regiment, though I could probably find out. Peoples was his birth name, but the spelling may vary.
I'll check out the URL

Peoples is a common surname in Donegal ... Peebles is also found in Donegal but not
to the same extent. It's possible that Alexander's mother had Lisburn connections.
