Seven Oaks to Snook

I'm trying to make a bridge between the line of William of Seven Oaks to my modern lineage of Snook. I've heard that the name Snooks (Snook) was a degenerated version of Seven Oaks almost like a vulgar slang. (How depressing is that?) I've also heard that there is a book in the UK called something like "The Book of Snooks".

If anyone has any information on the lines descending from William of Seven Oaks or if you know where to find a UK written history of the Snook line, I would love to hear from you!

I just wanted to add that there is a marriage in my family to a James Sevenoaks, but his name is later abreviated to S'noaks, and then Sunnocks, so I think you will find the change in name may have started as a written abreviation,

How far back have you got with your Snook line? If you can give us some idea of that we might be able to help you take it further back.

BTW I have a snook in my family too - there are a lot of them around the Urchfont area of Wiltshire.  Maybe they are connected ?

I am a SNOOK by marriage, tracing this family tree most appear to originate near Midsomer Norton area of Somerset. 2 Branches
moved to Wales. there`s another branch of the same tree in Tasmania Australia and reputedly one in the U SA cannot find this
one although supposedly killedin a bar brawl !!!

I am also chasing the Snook line back.  I have gone as far as Vincent Snook, born around 1680 in Urchfont and married to Elizabeth (Unknown), born around the same date.  They had a son Thomas, B.19/01/1705 who married Elizabeth (Cluff) B. 1706 and D. 15..11.1784, also in Urchfont, Wiltshire.

I am chasing parents and grand parents etc of Vincent, also his wife's maiden name.  In fact any details of these people and their ancestors.

Our family lore recalls that our Snook family originally came from Seven Oaks in Kent when many people did not have formal surnames. They settled in Somerset and became known as "Snook."  My great-grandfather and three brothers (as "remittance men") emigrated from England directly to California by ship.
