Hi Paw42

There is no information there that we have not found. PAW 42

I am saying this in hopes it will be of help in any further searches you may undertake. The above statement suggests that you had a lot of information.

And details you have provided in your last post would have been of great help in our searches.

When you, as searcher, know an amount of detail, it is best to give it all at the outset.  Otherwise people have to search it out over time and things do not move as smoothly as they might.

Anyway, perhaps something has been achieved in the hunt :D.

Good Luck!
Sue

You may have seen the digitised will for J T Atchinson.  It mentions his daughter, and his BROWN nieces and nephews - I didn't see a mention of William or his children - may have missed it though!

I'm really sorry we didn't put up more of the story to begin with. I think we also should have posted it at another time of day as we were asleep and missed the conversation until this morning. We only came across John Atchinson's will, a few days ago. The gold watch was left to his daughter Annie Louise who was only a year old when her father died. John's wife remarried in 1865 to William Norquay originally from Orkney. They had 4 children. I wonder if Annie Louise survived infancy.

William's sister Mary had several children and 3 of them who died in infancy are buried in Brighton cemetery. James Brown died in 1887 (we think) and Mary in 1904. I'm not sure if their sons John William and James Melbourne Brown carried on the business.

Are the directories of Melbourne available on-line? I thought they were on microfiche at Melbourne library. We live in Scotland so my research has all been on-line.Very grateful to LoganH who went to the library to check the Bendigo Advertiser.

Thanks - where did you find the marriage ? Do you think the entry of William Atchinson in the 1870 Directory means he was living in the Red Lion Hotel?

Melbourne Directory 1870 (Sands)

I think that a William C Atchinson was residing between Edward Searle and Russell Garratt in Neil St between Drummond and Rathdowne streets.    Two houses up from the RedLion Hotel.

Mrs.E.Atchinson could be William's wife Elizabeth. Quite probably in fact.  Elizabeth's father died in England in 1870. Maybe they had already split up because Elizabeth wanted to go back to England.
