William ATCHINSON missing in Bendigo in 1863 onwards
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 16:02 BST (UK) »
We have traced my X3g grandfather to Melbourne where he had a drapery business from 1859-1862. From announcements in the Melbourne Argus we find that he became insolvent.
His daughter Laura was born in Bendigo in 1863. That is the last we hear of him. His wife and children returned to England some time before 1871. They appear in the census at Billinghay, Lincolnshire.
Can anyone help us trace William Atchinson? There may be a reference in Betty Jackson's "Bendigo Advertiser Personal Notices 1854-80'. This is out of print. Does anyone have a copy that they could consult for us?
His death does not appear recorded in Victoria BDM records.

Went to my local library today and had a look at the book
"Bendigo Advertiser Personal Notices 1854-80"
Their was no reference to the family name Atchinson. (sorry)
The nearest was Atkinson. (nothing close to your William though)

Searching for similar names I came across a James AITCHISON death 15/2/1854 age 21years, Comm Flat. The reference was from a book called "Where they lie, Early Burial on the Bendigo Goldfields 1852-1870 by Annette o'Donohue & Bev. Hanson. Again no reference to Atchinson.

The Pioneer Index for Victoria (which you probably have seen has)

Birth

Hi
Logan your last entry is not correct.

This is how it reads I think.

ATCHINSON Elizabeth
Father Clark William
Mother Mary UNKNOWN
Age 81
Birth Place LINC
Year 1869
Reg  6642

Only guessing, but she may have been WILLIAM ATCHINSON's mother.

This death too perhaps gives us the clue that WILLIAM's father (whose name Paw42 has not mentioned) was THOMAS .

This seems to be death for a child of ELIZABETH CLARK who seems to be WILLIAM's mother making this young man WILLIAM's brother..

ATCHINSON  John Thomas
Father: Thomas
Mother Elizabeth CLARK
Age33
Birth Place LINC
Year 1862

Not sure if any of this information is new to you, PAW, and I am also not sure it is helping at all with WILLIAM's death, however.... ;D

The above man  JOHN THOMAS ATCHINSON  left a will digitised for reading.

He died in Brighton and was  a storekeeper.
He left most to his wife SUSANNAH and daughter ANNIE LOUISA ATCHINSON.  There were some nephews, sons of his sister MARY (nee ATCHINSON)

A  gold  watch is mentioned which was, at that time .....

" in the possession of my mother"

Hi,

1851 England Census.

Looks like at census time Mary Atchinson had married a James Brown and had a 1 moth old child with all residing with Thomas & Elizabeth Atchinson.  There is no sign of John or William residing at home.

Boston Lincolnshire
Thomas Atchinson 60 (Bootmaker empoying 6 men)
Elizabeth Atchinson 62
Mary Brown 28
James Brown 27 (Journeyman Grocer) son in law.
John w Brown 1 mo.
