MEAD Family
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 21:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Walter Mead perhaps born around 1820's 1830's and has a son named George born around 1867/68. Not much else to go on except George states on his marriage certificate in 1893 that his father was deceased and he was a Tackler.

Would it be a good idea to give us the details from the 1901 census? ie where does he give as his place of birth?  Who did he marry?  Have you checked the 1881 census yourself to see if you can see him?

Walter I know nothing of at all. There are very few Walter Mead's in the censuses before 1871. I found a Walter that died in 1868 in Devises aged 41. He married an Ann Chapman and they had about nine children the last record I have is a Rhoda b. 1864 d 1868. Walter died 1868 so it could be possible that Ann was pregnant when he died.
George married a Elizabeth Davies in Chorley Lancashire in 1893, and states on his marriage certificate that his father Walter was deceased.
George died in Chorley in 1953 his death certificate says he was 85.
George always said he came from Nottingham, but I think he meant he came from Nottingham to Adlington Chorley. I have searched the Nottingham registers and have found no record of a Walter Mead with a son George.

Have to work on George who is the only known quantity, otherwise you are taking guesses and clutching at a Walter who perhaps has nothing to do with the family - isn't Devizes in Wiltshire?

This would appear to be the correct 1901 census and gives us an idea of his date and place of birth.
6 Ellerbeck View, Adlington, Lancashire
All except George born Adlington
George Meade Head M 32 Coal Hewer (Below) Nottingham
Elizabeth Wife M 26
Arthur V son 7
Florence M daur 4
William son 2
Elsie daur 4 months
RG13; Piece:  3934; Folio:  88; Page:  38.

You need to keep in mind that Walter may very well have been made up by George for his marriage certificate, not an uncommon thing to happen if somebody was illegitimate.

Although the certificate stated Walter was deceased, did it also give an occupation for him
? and who were the witnesses?

It's ok, I realised you had already given that information.

Everything seems to add up to Georges birth year as 1869.
I may be better concentrating on searching Nottingham.
Thank you
