Nancy Tonks
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 13:26 BST (UK) »
Nancy Tonks (Agnes) born Oldbury 1882, was living in Odde Rode in the 1891 Census with John (a boatman) and Martha Tonks.
Can anyone see her in the 1901 census?

The family were in Odd Rode, Cheshire in 1891!

Reference RG12/2847/68a/17

Tonks, John  Head  M  28  Canal Boatman  b Penkridge, Staffordshire
Tonks, Martha  Wife  F  22  b Etruria Vale, Staffs
Tonks, Nancy  Daughter  F  9  Scholar  b Oldbury, Staffs
Tonks, Selina  Daughter  F  3  b Thurlwood, Cheshire

Martha seems awfully young to have been Nancy's mother?

Probably wasn't. She is shown as daughter of the head of household, i.e. John,
Best wishes, Judy :-))

1901, John and Martha can be found at Odd Rode.
RG13/3351/81/32

Selina is a Friend staying with the Palin family, also in Odd Rode.
RG13/3351/68/6

But no sign of Nancy?
No obvious marriage or death?  ???

Thanks for looking. John's first wife, also Nancy, died in 1886 and he married Martha in 1887. I did wonder if maybe Nancy could be listed as Agnes in the 1901 census. People named as Agnes are sometimes called Nancy. I also could find no record in Freebmd for a death or marriage for her.

Hi not sure if this will help, I have Nancy Tonks who married an Edward Asbury in 1918.
Nancy and Edward had my grandmother Selina Asbury hence the connection.

Nancy's mother also Nancy was married to John Tonks they married in Stone,Staffordshire in 1881, it seems that John was married twice as he went onto marry a Martha Smith who was born in Etruria Vale,Stoke-on-Trent in 1869.

Do hope this is of some help to you

Polly

Sorry about the late reply but I overlooked your message. Thanks for the info. I can't find Selina Asbury's birth!!!! The only Asbury/Tonks birth I could find was Norman 1919.
John Tonks's father was William who was the brother of my great grandfather. I have some info on William's father John, also a boatman, but not his birth or burial details.

THanks again

Bob

4th March 1829 @ St Peters Wolverhampton a Henry Palin son to William & Sarah was baptised fathers occupation listed as boatman. If you google Wolverhampton Boatmen you will find pages of weddings & Baptisms of boatmen in the area.

Hi Bob, my grandmother Selina Simcock nee Astbury was born in, according to her birth cert, Chesterton,Newcastle-under-Lyme, at 11 Cross Street which sadly is no longer there (the street name is still there but sadly the houses aren't) her date of birth is 28.05.1902.
I have a Norman but have him as being born c1894, I also have a sister for Selina, Margaret born1885 and her place of birth as being Cheadle Staffordshire, and another brother Frank born 1911 and who was married twice once to a Norah Bentley in 1933 and then for a second time to a May Charlesworth/Shenton in 1964.
I have Nancy Tonks born 1882 in Oldbury,Staffordshire, she had a sister Selina born 1888 and that's about as much as I know about her
I have an aunt with the middle name of Selina so it seems that the name has been passed down through the family.

I do hope this is of use to you
