Scrouther Family Paddington Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 12:40 BST (UK) »
Two of my ancestors, Ellen Groves Scrouther and Evelyn Bellew Scrouther, were born in Salford Lancs of a working class blacksmith father, but were baptised at St Paul's in Paddington (8 Dec 1886 and 27 Aug 1884 respectively).
Could someone kindly look up the baptism records to see if there is any clue as to why they would travel all the way to London for baptising? Neither parent had any connection to London (mother was from Sheffield), but it is possible their god-parents were connected to the Bellew family of Kensington.

Many thanks from the USA,
Geoff

Hi,

The Family Search site gives the baptism place as St. Paul's, Paddington, Lancashire;  both for Evelyn and Ellen.

Paddington, Lancashire is on the outskirts of Warrington.

Now I do feel foolish! Thanks so much. My guess is that this should read St Paul's, Pendleton, which is the local church near where they were born in Salford. Many thanks for your pointer,
Geoff

St Paul's Paddington is a part of Salford, Lancashire. Evelyn B Scrouther's grave is at Weaste Cemetery, Salford. It says that he is the son of Robert and Margaret Hannah Scrouther and was killed at Exchange Station, Manchester on 22 July 1909, aged 25. Robert's other children were Margaret Hannah (born 1881), William J (born 1882), Ellen G (born 1886) and Emily N (born 1889). I'm still researching this person. Hope this is helpful.

Thank you, Pete. Robert and Hannah were my great grandparents, and poor Evelyn died too young. My Uncle Jack Scrouther, bro just after Evelyn's death, had Evelyn as a middle name. Presumably named for Margaret Hannah's sister Mary Killen who married Evelyn Bellew, a rather famous and quite upper class gentleman. His brother was a famous actor of the day, and was the first actor ever to play Dr Watson on stage.

Do you have a family connection?

Hello Ormus, Thank you for your information, but I have no family connection. The Friends of Salford Cemeteries Trust (of which I am Secretary) one of our members posted a photo of the gravestone of Evelyn at Weaste Cemetery. I decided to do a bit of research to give members some further information. We are trying to find out what happened at Exchange Station where he died. Best Wishes  Pete

Is the grave still there? Although I live in the US I do visit the UK occasionally, and it would be an interesting experience to see where my relatives are buried. I have a number of Salford connections and I will look for the FB page.

Thanks so much for your work.

Hello from Salford. Yes the grave is still there. However, I didn't take the photo so I'll need to ask my colleague for its location/grave number. I plan to go to Salford Local History Library to see if there is a newspaper article on Evelyn's death/Inquest and will let you know what I discover. We  have a website www.WeasteHeritageTrail.co.uk, but we haven't been able to update it for a couple of years.
Best Wishes  Pete
