I am researching the Charters family of Antrim.
James Charters 1794-1861 may have been an army captain and farmer.
He married Anne Skelton 1798-1871 who I think came from Coxwold Yorkshire.
Both are buried Muckamore Cemetery with other family members.
They lived "Glendona",Gobrana,Post Town Crumlin,Parish of Camlin.
I believe that "Gobrana" may have survived to this day as there looks to be a B&B currently at this address.
Some of the family came to Australia in the 1800s.
I would appreciate assistance in my Charters family research.

CHARTERS - Crumlin, Co. Antrim

Good morning from here Christopher.
I have just noticed your Feb.posting(*) which mentions someone looking for the Charters family who lived at "Gobrana".
I have made a number of postings over many months looking for information regarding the Charters family, also Skelton and Ewbank.
I have not been successful to date.
I believe "Gobrana" may currently be a B&B and hoped there may have been some records regarding previous owners. However someone suggested that the building had been rebuilt.
James Charters 1794-1861 may have been a farmer and army captain but this has not been confirmed.
My maternal great grandfather came to Australia 1800s with a brother. There were others.
Charters Towers Queensland is named after William Skelton Ewbank Charters.
Earlier generations are buried at Muckamore Abbey during the 18th and 19th century.
Alexander Charters was Postmaster at Antrim in 1813.
I have a substantial Charters family history with many gaps.
Any information greatly appreciated.

Hiya Lazarus,

Glendona House is a Victorian mansion standing in four acres of mature gardens and woodland. The property was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century and was previously owned by Lord Abingdon. It's located on the Gobrana Road.

Thank you Christopher.
I had found a page on Google and had discovered Lord Abingdon was a previous owner.
I have tried emailing the current owners but cannot get a response.
I have the text of family letters dated 1860s written from "Glendona House" and it seems pretty certain that the Charters were one time owners.
I am trying to ascertain the Charters/Skelton/Ewbank connection.
James Charters 1794-1861 married Anne Skelton C1826 probaly in Camlin but I have not been able to confirm. He was a merchant "of Antrim".
A son Alexander attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He migrated to Rock River Valley USA.It is believe he became a member of the firm J&A Charters Linen Merchants. He married Ellen Boomer on 15 May 1827 at "Sea View" C. Antrim.
Would you suggest other information might arise by using other boards.
Thank you for your help to date.

Hi Lazarus,
I am researching the CHARTERS family and have seen others posts by you regarding WSEM CHARTERS. I have an old letter from a ggmother that says one of her ancestors was the person that Charters Towers was named after. Now my CHARTERS is not WSEM CHARTERS, but I would be interested to find out if there is any link between the two. My man is Charles CHARTERS b. abt 1821 Tromarara, Tipperary, Ireland. Immigration to Australia 8 June 1853 aboard "Australia".

Hello mwg1
Welcome to RootsChat.
Where are you located?
I have a substantial history of the Charters family of County Antrim.

WSEM Charters (William Skelton Ewbank Melbourne Charters) was a brother of my Clarence Hooper Charters 1829-1904.They were sons of James and Ann Charters of "Glendoa",Gobrana,County Antrim.Clarence known as "Hooper" was father of my grandmother.
Unfortunately I am not aware of Charles Charters from Tipperary but I would certainly like to look further.
I think my two Charters came to Melbourne in the beginning.WSEM travelled to the Cape district via Bowen Queensland.

Do you have any other Charters connections in the hope that I may be able to identify them?

Please contact me again.
