Cannot locate marriage evidence...
« on: Tuesday 29 March 11 21:00 BST (UK) »
Hi all, just after a bit of advice really! I have been stuck on a certain line of my tree for a while now. I have been trying to look for a marriage of my grandmothers mother and father but cannot seem to find any record of one! My grandmother and her siblings were born with the surname VARNEY in Nottingham - which is the fathers name (Alfred). Mothers is Patricia TAYLOR born 1908 died 1990.
Another thing is I know she (re?)married after having all her children to Harold FOX in 1950, I found the index for that marriage no problem. It says for her surname TAYLOR OR VARNEY. Is this normal to have 2 surnames on a marriage certificate? Or was Patricia and Alfred not actually married when they had children or they was an gotten divorced? I assumed divorce in late 40's time was still uncommon..?
Any advice or help would be much appreciated thanks!

Surprisingly I've found divorces as early as 1916, check on the National Archives site and see if you can find the details if you think there was one.

As for the two names on the index, there would be, one being her maiden name and the other her previous married name.  Her father's name should confirm which is her maiden name.

  Hi ....

There is a marriage in Nottingham but her name is not Patricia....

  Alfred Varney
  Sarah Taylor     Nottingham QT4  1921    7b 855.

It would be worth getting her "2nd" marriage cert to find her fathers name to track back .
 Have you pinpointed her birth?

Thanks for your help guys! I came aross the Sarah Taylor & Varney marriage as well  ;D...No I know her name was Patricia...

Another thing, on my Grandmother and Grandfathers wedding cert (1949) where it mentions Name of father & Occupation it states it as Alfred Varney but if he had died then would it say 'deceased' in brackets? As just noticed one of the witnesses signatures is Harold Fox - Patricias future husband who she didn't marry untill the year after! Very confusing!  ???

You did not have to prove the details on the cert. I have one where the father had been dead for twenty years dying when son was 6 months old but I took ages to find them as it did not say deceased.
Do you have the birth cert for Patricia...... or who does she state as father on her remarriage in 1950 to Harold Fox? Is she the one born in Sussex in 1908?

Why not order the certificate from the local Register Office, asking first if the bride's father's name is correct.  If it isn't it's unlikely that they will charge you for it.

The address, witnesses or other details might also confirm to you if this is the correct marriage, there might be many reasons for the name Sarah being in the indexes, such as a badly written name might be badly transcribed, or the registrar might have been distracted and wrote the wrong name down, or Sarah might even be a middle name.

If it were me I'd have to know.
