Looking for a birth and a marriage
« on: Tuesday 29 March 11 12:45 BST (UK) »
On the 1851 census (HO107/2004/335/10) Mary Jane Witty is with her Grandmother, Phoebe Knight and her Aunt Ellen in Bucknall, Staffordshire.
It states that she was born in Kingston, Jamaica (British Subject).
I believe that Mary Jane died in Q1 1856 (SOT 6b/84) and that her mother was Phoebe Knight, born 1811, the first of eight children born to William Knight and Phoebe Ridge.
I can't find Phoebe Witty on either the 1841 or 1851 census but I have found her in 1861 (RG9/1932/14/21) living in Hanley with her mother and sister, Ellen. In 1871 (RG10/2860/47/42) she is shown as a visitor in the household of yet another of her sisters.
So, two questions. What are the chances of finding a birth record for Mary Jane and a marriage record for Phoebe?
Peter

British overseas births 1818-2005 and British overseas marriages 1818-2005 are both on findmypast.co.uk and may be worth a look if you have not done so already
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

David.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, I have not found anything there, or on the IGI.

When you say you have found nothing on the overseas births on findmypast.co.uk do you mean by doing an index search or by browsing the individual pages. For these particular records you have to browse the individualo pages as they do not show in the indexes.

Well I haven't looked at EVERY sheet
If I search on the name Witty and it's derivatives then the earliest date suggested is 1849 - 1865 for births and 1871 - 1875 for marriages.
This is well outside the time frame that I am searching. (1835 - 1845)

On familysearch there is a baptism of Mary Jane Witty d/o Richard and Phoebe on 3 Feb 1856 at Wellington, Staffordshire.

There is no corresponding birth in the Civil Registration Index, leaving the possiblity that this is your Mary Jane baptised not long before she died.

Familysearch also shows a marriage of Richard John WHITTY and Phoebe WRIGHT in Stoke on Trent in 1831.

That's brilliant! Thank you.

I was a bit concerned about Wellington being in Staffordshire but I believe that it might be a part of Hanley.

I'll try and follow up the marriage, as well. It looks very promising.

Phoebe Witty wife of Richard John Witty is shown as a widow on the 1851 census so she can't be the mother of a Witty child born to Richard and Phoebe after 1851 (or 1852).
The reason it is hard to find her on the 1851 census is that she is listed as WILLY and has one child William with her. They are in the household of Phoebe's nephew, John Wright.:
Market Place, Burslem

John Knight, head, single, 18, butcher, employer, born Milton, Staffordshire
Phebe Willy [Witty], aunt, widow, 39, butchers housekeeper, born Bucknall, Staffordshire
Mary Knight, sister, single, 12, scholar, born Longport, Staffordshire
Edna Knight, sister, single, 8, scholar, born Burslem, Staffordshire
William Willy [Witty], cousin, single, 16, butchers assistant, born Bucknall, Staffordshire
Samuel Taylor, servant, single, 19, assistant butcher, born Burslem, Staffordshire
Ann Flanaghan, servant, single, 19, general servant, born Mayo, Ireland.

By the way, William Witty married his cousin Mary Knight in 1863. They emigrated to Australia in 1864.

The 1831 Marriage is on FreeREG under WITTY

Hi Ferfinds,
Welcome to Rootschat.
1851 Census Mary Jane Witty is born c 1842 Jamaica so is likely to be Robert/Phoebes Child.
A Later Baptism is quite possible for her in 1856 as Gallium found.

Trish :)

EDIT;
There is a also a Marriage for a Ann Maria WHITTY born c 1831 on Familysearch.Org.
Marriage 1857, Wellington, Staffordshire to John Edward Mathew VINCENT
Father Richard John Lawrence WHITTY
1851 pre Marriage she is born c 1832 Buckall, Staffs under Ann M WITTY, Nurse
1861 she is Ann Marie Vincent born c 1832 Hanley, Staffs
Another possible Child?
