UK Seaforth Highlanders- Smith/Pickthall
« on: Tuesday 29 March 11 03:25 BST (UK) »
Hi There

I'm helping an elderly friend with her genealogy and she believes her father was in the Searforth Highlanders in WWII. He was born James McDonald Smith and later changed to James Pickthall.  James was born 10 Jul 1910, Goat End Cottage, Gatehouse-of-Fleet in Kircudbrightshire. His mother is Jeanie Smith, his father is Archibald Pickthall (although he is not named on the birth certificate).

He came to NZ at some point, this would be before 1945 as he served in the Air Force here. We're just in the process of sending away for his service records. I don't know if there will be a mention of his time in any UK comany though. How would I go about finding any records for him, if he was in the Seaforth Highlanders.

Thank you

Regards

lil

Hi Lil

I think you are doing all you can. As he served after 1920 you can only order his records from the MOD. There there will not be any information online as it is classed as private. About 3 or 4 years ago the MOD/NA asked for comments about releasing inter-war records and those of the Home Guard during WW2. I did not see any feedback. So making such records public will be 8-10 years off I would guess.

Hi Ken

Thanks for your guidance. I've had a look at MOD, it's not too difficult to follow ;D

The positive aspect is that at least MOD/NA were asking for comments, which means they're open to change.

Thanks for your help :)

Hi,
I am a grandson of Archibald Pickthall, my mother is James Pickthalls' half-sister. During my research into our family tree we found that Archibald had adopted James, I do not know if in fact he was his natural father . We have some very old photographs of the family of which one is of three soldiers, wearing kilts. My mother said one of these soldiers was James, the faces of two of the men can be plainly seen , the third soldier is not so clear but perhaps still be recognisable as some facial features can be seen. The third soldier also appears to be very tall, my mother always referred  to James as 'Big Jim' perhaps this is James.
I would be more than happy to send a copy of the photograph to the lady mentioned if she would like a copy, As a new member I am unsure how something like this could be done , any advice would be appreciated .

Hello and welcome to Rootschat ;D ;D ;D

We have a Private Message system which people use to exchange email addresses (we don't post then on the live thread to prevent spam).

You can't use the PM system until you make three posts though - so you need to make a couple of replies to this - or elsewhere on the site.

You will find it on brown toolbar below the Rootschat picture under MY MESSAGES.

Meanwhile - please feel free to explore Rootschat - there are lots of interesting discussions and helpful chats going on and people will make you very welcome.  ;D ;D

Hi,
Thank you for the warm welcomes to this site.

 Lil
Please stress to your friend that apart from the photo  unfortunately all that we know about James is snippets of memories as my mother was very young when he emigrated .I would not want to raise her expectations that we perhaps know more than we do.  I can, however, be of a lot more help if she wanted to know about his very large family in Gatehouse of Fleet.

Regards
Del

Hi there,
My name is Colleen Ruud. I was born Colleen Pickthall and James Pickthall, born 10 July 1910 is my father. I do not know much about his life as he never spoke about it. I do have his birth certificate naming Jeanie Smith as his mother and that he was born at Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire.
I would love to find out more about my dad. I moved from NZ in 1995 to Norway.
I would appreciate any information from anyone.  :)

Regards Colleen

Hi Colleen and welcome

When you have posted twice more you will be able to correspond with your presumed relative via Personal Messages. You should use PMs to exchange email addresses for example, as posting on the open forum is not allowed due to them being picked up by spammers.
