Can't find him before that though?
The link with the 1901 lot is probably relevant here.
Ahhh, have found Joseph Gerrard in 1891 and his link is to the Molyneux's not the Ensall's

thought he might be with her being the step daughter.
I guess I'll have to see if I can get a birth certificate for William to find his parents

No blatantly obvious taker for him in the Birth index
I cant see him in earlier censuses either.
I wonder if he too came from a complex family like his bride.
Might be worth going for his marriage cert to see what he says about a father?

No I just thought that too Liz........no obvious birth record.
Maybe born illegimately under mum's maiden name?
I wonder if his dad was from Scotland.....why would they have 2 of their kids up there otherwise?

Good idea. There is a thomas ensall living in ince, born around the same time in staffs, as was william. I wonder if this was his brother? He is also on the 1901 census in lanarkshire, where william jr was born. Seems an awful lot of coincidences...

Maybe their mum is a midwife!!!
And Mary sounds like she might be a sister?
