Help with name please
« on: Monday 28 March 11 15:24 BST (UK) »
I am having trouble finding a marriage for my Gt grandads sister Mary.

I know I have the right family in 1871 as all the children, well at least those who are there, were born in the right places.

Mary Taylor nee Gordon born 1825 Edinburgh and her children Ann Amelia b 1854, Henrietta Jane b 1858 and Margaret Taylor b 1859.

Its her eldest daughter I am having trouble deciphering, though she is down as stepdaughter and the name is transcribed at Mary David Howard, I think its Mary Tayor ???? as her place of birth and age is correct for being the daughter Mary. Her children, or stepchildren, I'm guessing due to her age plus she is described as unmarried. Wouls she be caring for her fiances children whilst he was away in the army?

Can any one tell me they think  her second name is and where the two children Robert (Highlanders ? India) and Robert where born.

Many thanks in advance

I agree  ;D

The 19 year old step son is Robert Stewart so it seems to tie in well too.

I think Robert and Alfred had the same birthplace which runs over their two lines.

Something like "Born in the 75 Highlanders _________(?) India".

I read his age as 9 rather than 19 (and Alfred's as 5).

You're quite right Anna- the squiggle in front of the 9,is just that....a squiggle and not a number one  8)

Many thanks to you all. I did think it was aged 9 for Robert but still can't find a Stewart for either of them on the births overseas.

I wonder why mary called herself Stewart if she was unmarried??

Thank again.  ;D

I think it might be "Born in the 73 Highlanders seated India" ?

As for the name - definitely "Mary Taylor Stewart" as everyone else seems to agree. :)
