Ryan is a very common surname in Co. Tipperary, so you would need some more details to narrow your search down a bit.

Do you know what part of Co. Tipperary Johanna came from, or her father's name and occupation ?  (e.g. from a marriage cert)

Thanks Shane. Yes, Ryans in Co Tipperary certainly do pose some problems. I am trying to ascertain if this Johanna Ryan could be the daughter of Patrick Ryan and Johanna Leonard who were married in Kilcommon parish, archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, on 14 Jan 1864. Patrick's home at the time is listed as Blackstairs, Tipperary, and Johanna's as Clonmurragha. They had 11 children with their 7th child being Johanna, christened in Kilcommon on 22 Oct 1876. I know that Johanna, senior, and 4 of her children migrated to Australia and have recently found evidence of a Johanna Ryan, b1876, who also sailed to Australia in 1900. Unfortunately I have not been able to track any of her movements since she arrived in Rockhampton. Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi my name is Paul Barrett. I am researching my family histrory, the Kennedy family, from this region. there are as you would expect numerous Ryan Kennedy marriages.

I have however a James Ryan, who was born according to his marriage certificate abt 1851, Co Tipperary, Father John Ryan, Mother Mary Hammersley., a search of the australian records shows 1 other a Mary Ann Ryan, whos parents are listed as John Ryan and Margaret Hammersley, Holywood, Tipperary.  James had been married previously, and is listed as widower, 38 at the time of this marriage.

Irish roots show 2 James Ryan Born John amd Margaret Hammersley, in Clonmurragha, Kilcommon baptied 1852, and 1856.

James was living in Walhalla, a miner, he married a Ellen Hellena Agnes Warne, B Co Tipperary in 1889. They had 3 children, of which 2 survied Henry Graham Royce Ryan B 1891, Died 1892. John Gladston Ryan (Jack) B 1892 and Henry Gratton Ryan B 1894.

James died 1897, and Ellen or Nellie went on to marry a Edmond Kennedy, who was the son of William, the Son of Denis Kennedy, from either Toor, or Keeper, in Tipperary.

Also of interest is a Patrick kennedy, B 1802 Tipperary Ireland, the son of Andrew Kennedy and Catherine Ryan. Still to figure him out, but he had dealings with this Henry Warne, of Walhalla, who had considerable minning interests in the region.

Johanna is also a common name in the naming patterns of the Ryans and Kennedys of the region.

Not much help, but maybe rings a bell?

Regards,

Paul
